When it comes to games based on movies, parents should always beware. Why pump a lot of money into a title that kids will want based on name recognition alone? Despite this, the Shrek games have all been surprisingly decent. Sometimes good (check out "Shrek Super Slam," probably in a bargain bin near you) but never great. Shrek the Third, the new tie-in action adventure game isn't great, but it's colorful, consistent and worth a look for any kids who can't get enough of the big green Ogre.
In all versions (the game is available for all platforms and there are slight differences between the handheld and console versions) the player is tasked with guiding Shrek through colorful worlds bashing bad guys and collecting coins and other treasures. Following the films plot, Shrek must rescue Artie (a puberty stricken King Arthur) and Fiona must defeat the evil Prince Charming and his minions. Along the way players will take control of Puss n' Boots, Donkey, and even Sleeping Beauty. There are also challenges and mini-quests, like destroying Hooks piano or making it all the way through a level without losing a life. It's disappointing that there's no co-operative play in this game. Shrek 2 let siblings or parent and child tackle the game together and that's always a good thing. There is a multiplayer mode, but it's limited to only mildly diverting mini-games. The bottom line here is that Shrek 3 is a good movie tie-in but that makes it only a decent game to while away a hot summer afternoon. ![]()
There's nothing you haven't seen in countless action games, except for a novel scene where Captain Hook plays piano and your beat-downs of piratical foes are what leads him from verse to verse. Shrek wins by being colorful, charming, and three difficulty levels made for kids; game playing teens will still complain that it's too easy of course.
Other Platforms: PC: Cheap and getting cheaper all the time. PS2, Xbox: As reviewed Xbox 360, PS3: More expensive, better looking. PSP, DS, GBA: Not reviewed here.
