For more than ten years, Puzzle League has enchanted puzzle game fans from around the planet. Long time Nintendo fans have probably played Puzzle League before, just under a different name. Riding the coattails of other popular names in puzzle games and familiar game characters of the time, Puzzle League has also been called Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle League. And now you can enjoy all the puzzling action all around the planet on the Nintendo DS with Planet Puzzle League.
Despite a different name and game system, Planet Puzzle League still plays the same. A well of colored blocks rises from the bottom, and you must slide blocks to match three or more colors horizontally or vertically to make them disappear. Any blocks above will fall, and if they make matches and disappear, it counts as a chain reaction. Make matches and chain reactions to boost your score and slow down the ever-rising stack of blocks. If the stack reaches the top, it's Game Over. Gone are the familiar Mario and Pokemon Nintendo characters in the backgrounds, replaced by a more stylized disco/retro/techno audio and visual theme. ![]() One of the big new things about Planet Puzzle League is how you control the game. In the old titles, you shifted around the blocks left and right by moving a cursor. But on the DS, slide blocks sideways by using the stylus and touch screen. It's easy to get the hang of playing this way, but sometimes you might accidentally slide the blocks above or below the row you want if you're not dead on while shifting blocks. Hold the Nintendo DS sideways like you would while reading a book. Scores and stats are on one side while the playfield is on the other. Planet Puzzle League supports both right- and left-handed players. The myriad of game modes will keep solo players busy for a long time. Tackle Endless Mode, go for high scores in Time Attack, compete against the computer, clear blocks with limited moves in Puzzle Mode, and much, much more. Friends can even compete wirelessly with single cart multiplayer modes. Best of all, Planet Puzzle League truly goes planetary with online WiFi. Play against random puzzlers, people in your friend code list, or players of the same skill level. With so many ways to play, Planet Puzzle League will please puzzle fans of any age. ![]()
No violence whatsoever. Reading skill is helpful for navigating the menus, but not necessary for simply playing the game. Playing online is relatively safe as the only questionable content you might run across is another player with a rude name. Some of the challenges can get tough later on in the higher difficulty levels, but kids (and adults) who enjoy puzzle games will still love Planet Puzzle League.
