Unplugged: GenCon 2007

Indianapolis, invaded!

Indianapolis recently experienced one of its largest invasions of the year; second only to the annual FFA convention. GenCon, celebrating its 40th year of existence, once again arrived in central Indiana to put on its 2007 show of all things game-related. Even the downtown restaurants get into the spirit - some of them even change their menu to provide "gamer-themed" dining options.

GenCon 2006 was the largest game-related convention in the US at somewhere around 30,000+ attendees (technically 85,000 people-days over the four days of the convention). GenCon 2007 seemed to be at least as large as last year, but the pundits are expecting the expanded PAX (Penny Arcade Expo) gaming convention in Seattle, Washington to beat out this year's GenCon attendance. For those who are curious, the largest game related conventions in the US would probably be GenCon in Indianapolis, Origins in Columbus, PAX in Seattle, and possibly the San Diego ComicCon could be included as well since there is a large gaming presence there. While PAX is primarily focused on electronic (read videogame) entertainment, Origins has a strong boardgame and wargaming presence, and the ComicCon in San Diego obviously leans heavily towards comic books. GenCon is the most diverse of all the conventions, having a heavy emphasis on gaming of all sorts, with electronic gaming present but probably the least represented.

GenCon offers gamers four days (August 16th to the 19th) of a wide variety of gaming choices: boardgames, role playing games, miniatures gaming, wargaming, collectible card games, and a fair representation of various video game companies. The emphasis is on playing so most of the events going on provide ways for attendees to either play games or compete in tournaments of their favorite games.

GamerDad Unplugged's Matt Carlson took the short trip down to the Indianapolis Convention Center to check out what's new in the world of boardgames and gaming in general. Check in all this week as he gives the low down on what games are highest up on his interest list.
