The ESRB Says
Violence: GamerDad battled enemy Transformers all over the place. Generally movie tie-in games are harmlessly average and uninspired affairs that reconnect fans to the movie while offering little to anyone else. Occasionally there are really good ones that transcend just being a tie-in, and sometimes there are games so bad and gratuitous that they serve only to remind us that these things are made to feed off of the excitement surrounding a movie release. This game is an example of the latter. The basis of the game tends to make you expect something generally mediocre - third person action game with plenty of playable characters from both sides and some limited exploration and a variety of missions to pursue and limited ad-hoc multiplayer. Nothing ambitious, but it could work. Except that the execution is a mess - you will sense this as you watch the loading indicators crawl across your screen for just about everything - a minute for a cutscene followed by another minute for a short mission followed by ... oh, I think you get the picture. And what you get once it loads is not impressive: the gameplay takes a very safe and pared down route - this is much smaller than the console or DS brethren - but the controls and graphics are just terrible for a PSP game. It is amazing how fast this becomes boring and repetitive. Unfortunately, with this game, there is LESS than meets the eye! ![]()
There are two sides to Transformers - the Autobots who are sworn to protect the humans and the Decepticons who really don't care who or what they destroy. The content is typical a fairly generic action game - only this time you get to play as shape-shifting robots! You do play as both sides in the conflict, but there are no moral choices to be made, no lessons - just beat up the other bots and meet your mission goals. There is nothing inappropriate for anyone who has seen the movie - and the game allows kids a bit younger safely in on the action.
Other Platforms: PSP: Version reviewed. Worst framerate and load times of all versions, and the most terrible controls and least cont DS: Completely different game - and the best one related to the movie, reviewed separately. PC: More content than PSP, but not worth playing - poor camera and combat controls. PS2: Basically the same content as the PC version - poor camera control and boring combat. PS3: Basically the same content as the PC version - poor camera control and boring combat. Not very 'next gen'. Wii: Basically the same content as the PC version - lousy Wii controls make everything frustrating and feel 'sloppy'. XBOX360: Basically the same content as the PC version - poor camera control and boring combat. Not very 'next gen'. Comments? Chat about it in our forums!
