The ESRB says:
Violence: Fighting other robots and destroying cars and buildings is what GamerDad did for the entire game Like the warring Autobot and Decepticon sides, the DS games tied to this summer's robotic blockbuster are two sides of the same coin. Our own Mike Anderson has already taken on the Autobot version and came away impressed, so how will the bad guys fare? Both versions feature the same gameplay - take control of a variety of giant transforming robots and visit several locations from the movie and beyond in a "sandbox" environment where you decide which mission you want to take on next. The two games look and sound good, especially for DS games, with lots of spoken dialog rather than just text, and solid 3D graphics. I definitely agree with Mike that the online wi-fi mode is a brilliant implementation, with all players globally competing with their offline scores to help their chosen robot faction in the "Battle for the Allspark". As a kid, I never cared for the goody two-shoes Autobots, so I appreciated the fact that this game tells a little more of the Decepticon story, something the movie failed to do. Unfortunately, I found the gameplay itself to be lacking, with the promise of more story being the only thing keeping me playing. As I only played the Decepticon version I can't say how the missions compare, but for the Decepticons it is basically "go here, destroy this". With some of the missions being frustratingly difficult due to the game's targeting system and controls, this only added to the feeling of repetition. Hopefully my expectations were just too high and other people will find the game enjoyable, but as it stands I can't recommend it to anyone but the most rabid "gotta have 'em all" Transformers fan.
The ESRB gets it right with the "E10+" rating the game is clearly aimed at that age, from the humor to the simplistic action. The player is controlling the "bad guys" in this version, but in our opinon that's akin to playing the robbers in a game of cops & robbers. Tasks involve destroying buildings, vehicles, and other robots. While there is no reason for the player to preserve human life, it is never explicitly presented as such for example, the player will be destroying Army vehicles but focus is drawn away from the fact that those vehicles would have people inside in reality. You may prefer to go with the Autobot version if this aspect of the game troubles you, however.
