Just like the popular virtual pet simulator Nintendogs, take care of and interact with a virtual horse using the DS touch screen and stylus.

First, choose a breed of horse and name him or her, or design your own perfect pony with specific colors and markings for the coat and mane. You can have up to three horses in your stable at one time. Buy food, treats, snacks, and accessories for your horse at the store, and clean your horse's coat, mane, tail, and hooves using the touch screen and stylus. But be gentle. Take your ponies out to the field for exercise and interaction, and pet your new equine pals and give them snacks and treats. If you're not sure how to take care of your pony or if it gets sick, helpful hints and tips are almost always on the top screen to read.

Take your pony out for a ride, and pet your friend and look around with the touch screen. While riding, take pictures of wildlife and find hidden trails and secrets along the way. You can also enter your pony in races, cheer for them into the DS microphone to make them run faster. Back at the stable, accessorize your ponies with bridles, saddles, horseshoes, and you can even design blanket patterns for them to wear. The more you spend time with your ponies, the friendlier and happier they'll be.

The 3-D graphics are pretty good and the horses have realistic movements and mannerisms. The only problem I had with Pony Friends was I never could figure out how my pony liked to be petted when out in the field. I'd try rubbing it in different places and Turbo Horse (my pony) would still get irritated and run off. And there were no directions as to how to pet my pony properly. Maybe it just didn't like the name I gave it. But other than that, Pony Friends does what it sets out to do relatively well. And while hardcore gamers may sneer at such a game, a young horse fan will probably be pretty delighted with Pony Friends.

It's clear that many girls at one point want to own a pony and even boys like to play cowboys and ride horses, so Pony Friends is great for all ages. While there is written text on the top screen that gives out hints and tips, sometimes it can still be a little hard to know what to do, and younger players may need help from time to time. Pony Friends can even be considered educational. Even I learned about the names of different breeds and coat patterns, and that you must take stones stuck in horses hooves out after riding. Overall, little horse fans will get a kick out of Pony Friends.
