The ESRB Says
Language: GamerDad found that some fares were less appreciative of our antics than others. Mild Violence: The game is all about driving as dangerously as possible without crashing. As a non-console gamer I am amazed at how many influential classics came from the relatively short-lived Dreamcast console. Having played some of the other racing games on the PSP I have gotten used to certain things - only to find out that they have been around since Crazy Taxi. This is actually a combination of the first two Crazy Taxi games with a few minor tweaks added. Unfortunately while the influence is obvious, the rest of the game feels like something that 'used to be fun' ... but just really hasn't held up well over time. The value of getting both classic Crazy Taxi games in one package is quite compelling - you get plenty of driving action and get to challenge yourself in two different settings. Unfortunately the action doesn't translate well onto the PSP - sometimes you feel like you are constantly out of control, other times like you are driving through molasses. You can see the underpinnings of a fun experience, but it feels like too little attention was given to updating the games and making sure the experience was satisfying. As a result it feels shabby and poorly ported. It is hard to see these as anything but a nostalgia trip - and even for that I would suggest hunting down a DreamCast and the original games since they will likely play better in the original setting than on this translation. ![]()
These Crazy Taxi games remind me very much of the feel of playing Burnout Dominator - both are inherently about driving as dangerously as possible to rack up points (or in this case, money). Of course these games are centered on driving dangerously while carrying passengers, so the penalty for crashing is more exaggerated. But at the same time the arcade game look and feel is even greater. Based on the focus on violence and reckless driving I'm sticking with the 10+ rating, but many younger kids could handle this quite easily.
