The ESRB Says
Blood and Gore: GamerDad was constantly beating enemies to death and watching them 'go to pieces'. Intense Violence: This is pretty much the same thing as the lyrics. Mature Humor: This is pretty much the same thing as the lyrics. Strong Language: The 'F word' and others were used several times in the opening scene and repeatedly thereafter. Interestingly for an action-platformer, the combat and platforming action in Dead Head Fred are the weakest parts of the game. Even more surprising is that the game is an absolute blast regardless. With dark humor throughout and some fun game mechanics and excellent level design,Dead Head Fred is a fun and fresh experience unlike anything else you've played on the PSP. Fred is a private detective hot on the tail of uncovering a mob boss when he is killed and decapitated - then reanimated by a mad scientist who had to use a jar to store Fred's brain and eyes. The remainder of the game is the tale of Fred's quest for revenge ... and to find his head! There is plenty of combat along the way - early on it seems promising, but between the camera and controls it stops being particularly fun and becomes a chore to get past on your journey. The same is true for platforming - the controls and funky camera angles conspire to make things more difficult than they need be too many times. Fortunately everything else in the game works together to help Fred's amnesia spread to you regarding the flaws - the voice acting headed up by John C. McGinley as the main character is simply stellar, and the various puzzles and mini-games are a blast. While the game never rises to the level of greatness it seems to grasp for in the early stages, it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience and an easy recommendation for any adult PSP gamer. ![]()
There are some games that make it clear from the outset they are not intended for kids, and Dead Head Fred is certainly one of those - decapitation, mutilation, dark and humor otherwise inappropriate for children come at you fast from the very beginning of the game and don't stop for hours until you finish. The violence, blood and gore are all extreme as well - most special moves involve decapitating or beating enemies until their head explodes. Language, themes, humor, violence, and so on - this is definitely made for and recommended for adults.
