The ESRB Says
Mild Blood: GamerDad saw minor blood spray while shooting enemies. Mild Language: Words such 'hell' and 'damn' were uttered occasionally during pitched battles. Violence : The entire game is one long series of battles Melding the free online Enemy Territory mod for Return to Castle Wolfenstein with the Quake universe, Enemy Territory: Quake Wars is a deep and fun shooter that takes learning from years of online multiplayer games and brings them together in a clash that is as satisfying as it is intense. The game brings a new face to the online shooter world just in time for some stiff competition with the upcoming release of Valve's Team Fortress 2 - and based on my experience with this game, fans of online shooters have much to cheer about this fall! The game is based on Earth, and has two sides - Strog (from the Quake series) and GDF (Global Defense Force). You create a profile and start up the game to join in a battle - you can play 'single player' but it is essentially a 'bot match' (i.e. you are playing the same game as online, only against the computer). The real action comes in LAN matches or massive online battles - the only thing missing is voice chat (whether this is good or bad depends on your perspective). Once you join a game you choose sides and your specialization, then wait to spawn in. The game makes objectives very clear, and rewards you well for successful combat and also meeting objectives. The gameplay is tight and the visuals are very well done - and the experience system is extremely well implemented. This is something that felt like a gimmick and has had some minor issues with implementation and balance in the Battlefield games but feels very well done here. The total game is loads of fun to play and is an enjoyable addition to the multiplayer shooter world that will reward fans of the genre willing to put in the time to work on their soldiering skills. ![]()
Multiplayer shooters end up with two different advisories - one based on the game content and another based on the community. Based on the content this is a solidly 14+ GamerDad Age Seal. The descriptors note that the blood and language are 'minor' which corresponds with my experience playing the game. However, the violence is pitched, fast paced and frenetic and you will be in constant peril - killing others and dying yourself. The community for online shooters tends to be as much a concern as the game content - the advent of standard voice chat allows miscreants to say just about anything they please to whoever ends up on the same server. For good or bad Enemy Territory: Quake Wars has no voice chat, thereby limiting the 'verbal abuse factor' and making this game a clear T-Rated and solidly 14+ GamerDad Age Seal experience.
