The ESRB Says
Cartoon Violence: GamerDad fought battles much like those seen in the Naruto cartoons. The moment I started Naruto: Ninja Council 3 and had face of Naruto all over the screen shouting the title at me I knew this game was firmly planted in the Naruto universe. The game is a pretty basic combination fighting / side-scrolling romp full of button mashing battles. It is fairly short but delivers exactly what fans of the series love and is an easy recommendation for anyone who knows anything about a 'Shadow Clone Jutsu'! I played through and found it to be a fairly typical button-masher with some special features thrown in from the series, but nothing that really had a lasting appeal. However, just a few minutes of my kids playing showed me that this was a game that had a very different appeal depending on whether or not you were a fan of the show. Evoking the various jutsus was a much more meaningful experience for them, as was getting to play with the dozens of characters. They were disappointed that there was no download play, but even alternating taking turns on battles was highly satisfying for them. This is a fun game, but not great - it is truly one for the fans. ![]()
The Naruto manga and anime (and cartoon) comic series tells the tales of an adolescent Ninja with a special inner secret that makes him shunned by some and of great interest to others. The Cartoon Network show has been wildly successful with kids in the elementary school ages due to the frequent use of 'potty humor' as well as its' focus on Ninja fighting and special magic-like attacks called jutsu's. The style in the game is identical to the cartoon - you have the brash, smart-aleck hero at the center with something to say about every situation.
In terms of content the majority of the game centers around button-mashing combat with occasional cutscenes interspersed. Cartoon Violence is the perfect description because it looks and feels very much like the comic series. If you have no issue with your kids watching Naruto on Cartoon Network you'll be fine with them playing this game.
