You can tell because every football fan who isn't watching the games or playing fantasy football is playing the latest edition of EA Sports perennial classic Madden series. Since Madden arrives annually, there's usually little point in reviewing it each year and we did cover Madden '07 last year. So why cover Madden '08 for Family Fun this year? Because the Wii edition is enhanced, immersive, and features a new mode of play built just for families, appropriately called: Family Play Mode.

Madden is complicated, even on the Wii. Basically you wiggle the Wii remote and Nunchuk to stiff-arm, juke, and catch/throw the ball. It becomes intuitive after a while, but there's so much to remember the game favors tech and controller savvy kids over their football loving parents. Nobody wants to love because the controls are hard and everyone wants to have a good time and that's why Family Play Mode is so welcome. It makes things simple. This mode puts running and catching into the hands of the artificial intelligence while the player handles all the dodging and controller waggling. The result is a game that's less satisfying to the Madden diehard fan, but far more accessible to everyone else and for family play, that's a very good thing.

The other difference is that the Wii is the only edition of the game that offers full commentary from Sunday Night Football stars John Madden and Al Michaels. It gets repetitive and sometimes the commentary doesn't quite match the action on the field, but it fits with the more casual, less hardcore style EA seems to be going for on Nintendo's more family friendly console. Madden NFL '08 on the Wii isn't the prettiest or fanciest version of the game, but it is the friendliest and that makes it worth a look for NFL fans looking to play some video game football.

That makes it great for kids getting started in Pop Warner Pee-Wee football leagues, dads and moms unfamiliar with video games, or even grandpa and grandma. Sports games are terrific ways to learn about the sport, enhance bonding, and introduce some friendly competition to the household. Watch the big game on TV together and then gather around to waggle the Wii remotes to see if you've got what it takes to take down friends and family. Seriously, video gaming doesn't get much better than that!
