Another excellent collection of original songs with great microphones make for a compelling family game!

Reviewed for PS2.

SingStar is Sony's karaoke game and unlike Konami's otherwise excellent Karaoke Revolution series, it comes with two high quality microphones and features the actual artists and their actual videos. In Konami's game you have to listen to sometimes decent, often disappointing cover bands and watch 3D animated characters rock out.

The game presents lyrics that fly across the screen and bars that tell you how to sing it. An arrow shows where your actual pitch is in relation to the goal and you score points based on how close you get to the actual tune. The game judges your pitch, intonation, and timing. It doesn't allow creativity, you must sing the way the original artists sing it, but it works well and can be addictive fun - especially in a party setting.

Each version has about 30 songs on it and it comes in, several flavors. We had a chance to look at "Rocks", which features rock tunes like Elton John (Rocket Man), Jet (Are you gonna be my girl?), the Police (Every Breath You Take). 80's which gives you Madonna, Culture Club, Bow Wow Wow and more, and Amped, which has an alternative line up featuring Fall Out Boy and The Killers.

With Eye Toy support, should you want to see yourself singing, and two really solid microphones, this is a solid addition to any videogame party lineup. Just be sure to turn down the vocal track so you can hear the neighbors, mom, or grandma's warbling in all its glory!

The lyrics and videos are the only questionable things here but aside from some of the heavy metal, its nothing you can't find in prime time on MTV 2, or whichever channel still plays music videos. Also, for younger players, reading is essential and that's hard to do when the lyrics go flying past at high speed.
