The ESRB says:
Mild Fantasy Violence: GamerDad made monsters trade blows and magic blasts with each other, but nobody dies. Defeated foes just turn back into eggs. Mild Language: Characters sometimes say very mild things like 'butt,' 'darn,' or 'poop. Crude Humor: Some of the Digimon attacks have names like "Random Poop." Digimon is a monster battling and collecting game similar to Pokemon. And like Pokemon, it's not only a game, but a toy line and cartoon show. Digimon World: Data Squad is a role playing game for the PS2 based on the new Digimon Data Squad TV show. Play as Marcus and his Digimon partner Agumon, members of a special organization out to stop evil Digimon from causing havoc in the digital and human worlds. Start off at headquarters to gather items and talk with fellow team members, then select missions to stop rogue Digimon threats. Out on the field, walk around 3-D areas in the digital world. Turn based battles with other Digimon occur randomly. Select commands from a menu to attack, heal, and defend. Your monsters have their own favorite moves, and if you have them perform those attack moves and encourage them when they're afraid, your Digimon partners will get along with you better and they'll have stronger attacks. Defeated enemies net you items, money, and experience points. Gain enough experience points to rise in level, and when your Digimon is at a high enough level, you can 'digivolve' it into a different, even more powerful monster. Graphics are colorful and cartoony, and fitting music and voices make it feel even more like the TV show. If you've played any of these kinds of monster battling RPGs, you'll be able to jump right into this one, though some of the bosses are a little tough. Sometimes the camera angles are bad and everything runs at a very slow pace. Whether it's the long loading times or slow battle animations, only the most patient of Digimon fans will enjoy Digimon World: Data Squad. ![]()
Even though the game is about fighting monsters, violence is light because attacks are only flashes of light and nobody dies. Defeated enemies just get turned back into eggs. Even though most of the game has voice acting, reading skill is still necessary for all the menu navigation and times when there are no voices. Most kids will probably get bored of Digimon World: Data Squad's slow pace, though.
