The ESRB Says
Violence: GamerDad spent the entire game shooting at enemies. Despite long load times, the lack of online multiplayer and many features cut from the console version of the game, 2005's Star Wars Battlefront II delivered a fun experience and has remained a staple shooter among PSP users. The game left players with an obvious question - imagine if they made a fully-featured version specifically for the PSP. Well now they have, and while it is not perfect it offer loads of gameplay modes and improves on the original in every way. This exclusive PSP game has a nicely integrated story mode that weaves in and around the Star Wars Original Trilogy - you are present for the critical battles on Hoth and Endor, as well as other famous worlds such as Tatooine. There are also worlds taken from the vast Expanded Universe such as Ord Mantell. The space battles feature all of the famous craft of both the Rebellion and the Empire. All of this attention to the Star Wars universe is not wasted - the game does a great job of immersion throughout the story mode, and that carries through the rest of the game. The Galactic Conquest mode, already the highlight of the first game, has been improved to include more strategic and tactical options. The biggest addition is online multiplayer - and fortunately the developers packed that mode with FUN! Join in matches with up to 16 players in space or on the ground, in battles that include maps and characters from the prequels as well as the original trilogy. Classes have been dropped from the original games, allowing you to adapt to the needs of the battlefield simply by going to a control point. Joining games is easy, and the maps work well for some fun and varied battles - I found I could dominate one map and be at the bottom of the heap on the next. It is unfortunate that the PSP doesn't allow running at full processor speed while using the WLAN connection - the graphics in the single player game are excellent but had to be scaled back to run efficiently in multiplayer. The ground and space combat have both been improved from the original, but you will still be dealing with controls that will frustrate you more than necessary - especially compared to other shooters and air combat games. Aside from that, this game is wonderful fun and packed with gameplay. Jump into the action, play through the story, conquer the universe, or engage in 16 player battles. All of it is fun, and this is more than just the best portable Star Wars game yet - it is the best multiplayer shooter to date. It is an easy recommendation to fans of shooters, Star Wars, and multiplayer romps. ![]()
The first two Star Wars Battlefront games were Rated T based on the intense action and first-person shooter gameplay. Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron features nearly identical action and is therefore also Rated T and recommended for kids 14 and older. This new PSP exclusive is every bit as visceral as the others, but there is no concern about language - and you no longer have challenges that task you with sniping Gungans and Ewoks. This would not likely be a problem for most kids 10+, but as always use your judgment and knowledge of your child.
