NHL '08 doesn't try to reinvent the puck, instead it adds a few new features, fixes some problems, and builds on the more realistic kind of Hockey EA Sports has been slowly moving toward for the past few years.
The biggest innovation in '07 was that they moved all the stick and puck control from the buttons to the right stick. This year they've added much needed game modes to the lineup. First off is an improved Dynasty mode. Players have deeper management and coaching options, like a new negotiation system that lets players negotiate player salaries. A new practice mode is very welcome, since it explains the game for new players and lets gamers figure out when to use different formations, how to perform a slapshot or even knock the puck between an opponent's legs and skating around to pick up the easy shot on the goal. Players can even create their own plays in this mode and then use them against the computer or human opponents. The computer seems to be a much smarter player, in testing we found a lot fewer instances of the computer scoring unrealistic numbers of goals (in '07, we swear we played a game where the computer scored 10 points in a single period!). They've also limited, or somehow reduced the number of monster hits and checks in the game which is realistic and the result is that the big hits that do happen are that much more satisfying. Textures are sharper across all platforms, but the PS3 and Xbox 360's HD resolution almost brings the game to the level of television presentation. Lastly, the online component is smoother and players report a lot less lag than last year. EA Sports is continuing their annoying practice of dropping multiplayer support for earlier versions to "encourage" players to upgrade each year. It might be worth it this year though since they've added support for online leagues (a fan request for a number of years now). Arranging tournaments, particularly on Xbox Live, is a snap! While there's nothing revolutionary in terms of changes offered in '08, the game is certainly evolving in a more satisfying direction for hockey fans. '08 is best for true fans or players addicted to multiplayer or anyone who missed the major upgrades in the '07 version. ![]()
Sports games are a great way to bond with children, spend time together, and the game helps teach everything about hockey and the NHL. Online play is not rated by the ESRB. The E-10+ rating seems strange because Hockey on TV and Hockey in real life are MUCH more violent and viewed/played by plenty of kids under 10 years old.
