The ESRB Says
Blood and Gore: GamerDad stumbled upon gory bodies early in the game and then left a trail of our own carnage. Intense Violence: You will be in constant fierce battles. Language: Occasional use of the 'F' and 'S' words as well as the usual sprinkling of 'hell' and 'damn'. It is seldom a good thing when a game feels the need to remind you constantly who your characters is and force-feed you your motivation at every turn. Timeshift feels like one of those products that started with a half-page product description, 90% of which described the neato gimmick that they would wrap the game around. Unfortunately they got so busy making the game next-gen and pretty and having loads of internal development issues that they forgot to include compelling gameplay or much of any story at all. The result is a game that will make you say 'wow' ... perhaps once or twice because of the time-shifting effects, but after that only because you payed top-dollar for such a bland and generic throw-away of a shooter. The basis of the story is that you are a 'highly respected scientist' in a special suit after another scientist that has run off with an extra-special suit. These suits allow you to play around with time - think of it like bullet-time with a remote control. You can pause, reverse, replay, and so on. This leads to some fun gameplay moments - stopping time, admiring raindrops, taking weapons from enemies, putting grenades under the feet of people who just threw them at you, and so on. Sounds great - and it is! Those moments are as much fun as they sound, but they reek of gimmickry and are just not enough to sustain a story that makes no real sense and gameplay that feels like it should have been there for the original XBOX launch in 2001 rather than standing alongside some amazing shooters in 2007. It is a game that feels tired and dated while trying to be innovative and next-gen, and if there is one other upside it is that since it was released in a swarm of really good shooters it will be lost and forgotten until it is in bargain bins just after the holidays. ![]()
This game is appropriately rated M and gets a GamerDad Adult Age Seal not because of mature themes or complex issues, but because of the constant stream of blood and gore and expletives that stream throughout the game. The battles are fierce and pitched and you will struggle to survive from start to finish (unless you play on easy). This game is a typical 'bloody and brutal shooter' that is aimed right at older teens and adults ... but the kids aren't missing anything good by not playing this one.
