The ESRB says:
Violence: GamerDad punched, kicked, and blasted enemies with elemental based attacks. Avatar: The Last Airbender is a popular fantasy action animated series on the Nickelodeon TV cable channel. It tells the story of Aang, a boy who lives in a world where people have the power to control the elements. Aang, along with his friends, travel the world to learn the art of elemental control while having adventures and thwarting the conniving Fire Kingdom along the way. Avatar: The Burning Earth for the Nintendo Wii is a 3-D beat-em-up action platform game based on the TV series. Players control Aang and can switch between him and one of his many friends as they punch, kick, and use elemental attacks against foes. Sometimes you must also team up and use their elemental skills to solve puzzles, too. Aang can blow gusts of wind through pipes, and his friends can create ice bridges, pillars of earth, among other things. A second player can join in on the action, too, as one of Aang's friends. The 3-D graphics and character animations reflect the cartoon series well. The voice actors from the show even lend their talents here. Play control is decent, and even the Wii remote specific controls are easy to pull off. While the game doesn't do anything new or innovative, Avatar: The Burning Earth should please fans of both the cartoon show and beat-em-up games in general. Other Versions: Avatar: The Burning Earth is also available for Nintendo DS, Nintendo Game Boy Advance, Sony PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360. They're all pretty much the same game: though the GBA version is 2-D rather than 3-D.
Even though Avatar: The Burning Earth is a game about beating enemies up, violence isn't too graphic as defeated enemies only disappear in a puff of smoke. Plus, the game focuses on puzzle solving, teamwork, and friendship just as much as fighting, just like the cartoon. If your kids are OK with watching the TV show, they'll be OK with the game, too. Reading skill is helpful, but not always necessary, as most times the characters provide voice clues while talking to each other. Having the ability for a second player to join in helps, too.
