The ESRB says:
Cartoon Violence: GamerDad made Spyro the purple dragon slash, claw, and breathe fire on cartoony enemies that disappear in a puff of smoke when defeated. Comic Mischief: Spyro and friends made wisecracks and pulled off other cartoon style antics. That little purple dragon Spyro has yet another video game adventure on his hands. On the night of Eternal Darkness, a great evil is about to be awakened. Can Spyro regain all his powers and save the dragon kingdom once again? The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night for Nintendo Wii picks up right where the last game left off, so newcomers to the series might get a little confused at first. But all you need to know is there's bad guys and Spyro must stop them. His game is a 3-D platform jumping adventure with lots of obstacles, enemies, and bosses to fight. Spyro has all the moves you'd expect a little purple dragon to have. He can jump and glide, use his claws to attack, headbutt with his horns, and breathe fire. Later on he'll be able to wield other elemental breath attacks as well, and upgrade his powers by collecting blue gems. A mysterious dragon also gives him the power to slow down time temporarily so that Spyro can hop on speedy platforms, defeat quick enemies, and solve other time-based puzzles. Unfortunately, play control is not very responsive. Double jumps sometimes don't register, and the Wii specific controls that unleash Spyro's fury attacks almost NEVER work. Luckily the developers must've realized the Wii remote controls were bad, and let the players opt to use the Wii Classic Controller instead. But it still isn't much improvement. Not even a talented voice cast (including Elijah Wood, Billy West, and Gary Oldman) can save Spyro's new game from mediocrity. Fans of the purple dragon should skip the big console versions of Spyro's 3-D adventure and go for the Game Boy Advance Eternal Night game instead. ![]() Other Versions: The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night is also available on Sony Playstation 2, Nintendo DS, and Game Boy Advance. The PS2 version is the same game as the Wii. The DS game is still 3-D, but scaled back a little for the handheld. The best version is for the GBA, as it is a fun 2-D platform game instead.
Kids will like the fun characters of Spyro, but they'll probably get frustrated with the controls and difficulty. Even though Spyro slashes and burns enemies with his breath, violence is only minimal as enemies just disappear in a puff of sparkly smoke when defeated. While the game has an all-star voice cast, reading skill is still helpful here and there. There are much better 3-D platformers out there for your kids, though. Like Super Mario Galaxy.
