The ESRB Says
Blood: GamerDad saw blood in the HUD as he was hit by enemies. Violence: There were constant fierce struggles from beginning to end. Just when you thought that the Call of Duty series was destined to become another tired World War II series that degraded with each entry, along comes Modern Warfare that takes you into two scenarios of unrest that look at feel very realistic in today's world. While the Nintendo DS is not a hardcore graphics system, the game looks very nice and the stereo sound is quite immersive. The controls are the standard DS shooter - move with the D-pad, aim with the stylus and shoot with the L button. They are very nicely implemented and allow you to work between run-n-gun and tactical shooter tactics nicely. You play as alternating British and American soldiers in a series of missions that have you sniping, running-and-gunning, using squad tactics, shooting from aircraft and vehicles and in general just dealing with problem after problem as you seek out a group looking to launch a nuclear warhead in a missile. There is a single real problem with this game - the exciting and excellent single player campaign is only about four hours long and the only multiplayer mode is local ad-hoc battles. That is a real shame as this is a game that just screams for internet-based battles. But even with that caveat this is simply a wonderfully done shooter that combines the signature Call of Duty tense battles with missions built for the portable gaming experience. If you are thinking this is a watered-down port, think again - it is the best handheld shooter of 2007. ![]()
While it lacks the realism of its' PC and console brethren, the DS version of Call of Duty 4 is no less violent or intense. Enemies have blood spray as they die and your heads-up display becomes clouded with blood as you take damage. This game is a great example of the 'solid T shooter' - not so violent or gory to make it Rated M, but too violent and intense for younger kids. It is appropriately rated T and earns a 14+ GamerDad Age Seal.
