The ESRB Says
Blood and Gore: GamerDad saw blood spatter everywhere as he dispatched enemies. Violence: GamerDad saw blood spatter everywhere as he dispatched enemies. Given the lackluster 3D capabilities and the hit-or-miss nature of shooters on the DS, the likelihood of a horror FPS on the system being any good seems remote. Yet Dementium: The Ward really works on both levels - you will have a blast killing zombies and other monsters, and will find yourself enjoying the scares along the way. While it isn't the best shooter you'll play on the DS, it is a solid game that is loads of fun - and loaded with tons of thrills and chills! You play as a character who wakes up in a hospital bed with dreams of horrific sights and then finds that these visions are a reality ... but you are still a living human and the creatures around you have developed a taste for human flesh. You have to fight your way through the Ward and discover your identity and the secret of what is going on. The developers did a great job working with the natural fear of the dark and integrating sound direction as well as I've seen in a DS game. The overall experience is gritty and gruesome and gripping; you will constantly be on the lookout for another monster looking to surprise your and bash your skull in for a sample of your brains - and you'll also be fighting the impulse to shoot wildly as ammo is scarce. It is a great survival-horror experience paired with a solid shooter that is surprisingly effective in everything it sets out to accomplish. Great game for older teens and adults! ![]()
Given that the two ESRB advisories are pretty much a given for the genre - shooters are always violent and horror games always have blood and gore - you might wonder if this is truly an Adult experience. Trust me when I say that this game does earn its' GamerDad Adult Age Seal. Dementium: The Ward puts you at the center of a horrific experience that unfolds in front of you - dismembered bodies, reanimated dead, terrible experiments, and more. There is blood and gore aplenty, and shocks and horrific sights at every turn. This is definitely something for older teens and adults.
