The ESRB Says
Mild Cartoon Violence: GamerDad had to battle in the human world to avoid becoming bug juice!
The buzz around Jerry Seinfeld's CG feature The Bee Movie this summer felt like sticking your head in a hive, but the end result was an experience that was more like swatting at flies than savoring fresh honey. The game follows the basic plot structure of the film, sometimes painfully so, but then also tacks on useless junk for no other reason than to pad out the play time. One of the biggest offenders are the 'simon' moments - the game wants to show you an extended cinematic, but wants it to count as 'gaming' rather than cutscene. So you have to do the timed button pushing. This is one of those items that might have seemed like a good idea at one time, but has become recognized as a generally bad thing - especially when over-used as it is here.
The Bee Movie Game has elements that occasionally feel like a 'sandbox' exploration, except that you are constrained in where you can go and there is precious little to do. The overall game feels like a serious of disjointed elements - plenty of mini-games, driving around, one-shot missions based on scenes from the movie, and so on. But there isn't really any satisfying core gameplay - it is just a bunch of okay 'stuff' pieced together. There are control and visual transition elements that suggest that the game was rushed out the door without proper polish and testing for all of the different platforms. It is probably not the worst game you'll play this year, but there are many, many better ways to spend your money and game time even if you and your kids are fans of the movie.

As is typical with a tie-in for a movie aimed at kids, the content of this game is light and appropriate for just about everyone. There are times you need to survive challenges, but there is little violence and certainly never any sense of peril. Humor is widely used but is never inappropriate for an elementary school audience.
