The ESRB Says
Blood and Gore: GamerDad watched bodies flying around and blood spraying everywhere as he took out enemies. Strong Language: F-bombs were dropping like bullet casings ... Violence: From end to end, someone is shooting at you almost every second of the game. In a season crowded with truly great shooters, releasing anything but a mega-shooter seems foolhardy. And there are certainly examples of average games released this season that fall flat from the start and never get going that are destined for ultra-bargain status before the ground thaws in the spring. Then there is Alpha Prime, a sci-fi shooter that comes out of the gate with a look, feel and characters that suggest something better and deeper than most shooters offer. Unfortunately it doesn't sustain that freshness much longer than it takes to collect your first weapon and start spraying bullets around the mining complex. While the idea might have been interesting, the implementation is largely forgettable. The game has a decent story and nice visuals and soundtrack and is pretty long for a shooter, but is hampered by uneven enemy behavior, pedestrian shooter gameplay and some poor voice acting. Alpha Prime is a solid game destined to an unfortunate life as a game nobody knows or plays; a game that deserves more attention than it will get but is not good enough to end up on anyone's 'overlooked gems' list. It is an average shooter with a well told but relatively standard feeling story. It looks and sounds great, has decent gameplay and even a very memorable character. It deserves better than this. I really wish the developers had spent a few extra months on the voice recordings and tweaking the AI - this would have been a killer early spring release. As it stands, it is a serviceable shooter that will reward you for coming along for the ride. ![]()
Alpha Primeis a gory bloodbath full of cheap scares and populated with insane miners who have been driven to their violent and self-destructive state by a substance with drug-like effects. This is not a place for kids - not to play, not to watch, and not to listen. The strong language starts in the opening cutscene and keeps going to the very end - it is a ironic moment when one character reacts to something another says as being inappropriate, as that remark was one of the more tame this said in a game laden with F-bombs.
