The ESRB Says
Blood and Gore: GamerDad saw bodies brak into bits as he dispatched enemies. Intense Violence: The entire game is about blasting enemies faster than they blast you. Strong Language: Plenty of use of the typical 'strong' words throughout. My wife surprised me with a copy of Unreal Tournament in late 2000 right before I was taking one of my monthly (at the time) Six Sigma Black Belt trips out of state. That meant I had a week of hotel nights to play and a nice modem connection to boot! You know what surprised me - I kept waiting to find a story ... I was obviously new to the possibility of a multiplayer-only experience. That was seven long years ago, and much has changed while much has remained the same. Yet for all of the 'same-ness', this third (my count says fourth but never mind that) entry into the Unreal Tournament franchise continues to be an out and out blast to play! (See GamerDad's review of Unreal Tournament 2004 for reference). The basis of the game is this - you enter a confined area filled with respawning points for weapons, ammo, health packs, and ... well, you. The goal is to kill more than you are killed. Everything else is incidental. The game is gorgeous, sounds great, and plays fantastic. The only problem - it feels like a tuned-up version of UT2004. Again, that isn't a bad thing, but the gameplay really doesn't particularly stand out in this year of spectacular shooters. Still, for solid multiplayer fun it is hard to beat! It is a solid game that performs pretty well at high settings and delivers varied maps and settings and a fantastic array of weapons for dealing out destruction. ![]()
Unreal Tournament 3 is a gory bloodbath that has loads of stuff going on but never takes itself too seriously. As you destroy enemies they are 'gibbed' into little bloody bits, but it happens so fast and so completely that it isn't gory or disgusting in any way. The language used by the characters in 'story mode' as well as offline battles, however, is every bit as strong as any other M-rated game. The battles are intense and everything happens fast-and-furious. Also, given that the focus of the game is multiplayer - and voice chat enabled first-person shooters are notorious for badly behaved individuals - I am sticking with that rating and giving the game a Adult GamerDad Age Seal. That said, for families playing together at home over a network, this game can be an absolute blast!
