Zoom Zoom … Nintendo DS shoots past 50 million sold!
It is pretty amazing when you think about it – in the months prior to release, industry folks were quite skeptical about the ‘gimmicky’ (in the pejorative sense) dual screen handheld coming from Nintendo, looking for a true next-gen replacement for the GameBoy Advance. Many were predicting failure or at least a disappointment in the face of a coming challenge from Sony, though most cautioned never to count out Nintendo when it comes to handheld gaming.
We Can Be Heroes – Hospital Tales Pt. 1
As most of you know, I had a recent – long – stay at the hospital. Which is like being at the most expensive terrible Motel in the world. A place where the drug dealers are, for the most part nice, but they come in during the dark of night and leave the light one after forcing you to sample their wares. I mean, why would you need to sleep? I spent a lot of time with my trusty DS during my two-week ordeal but even more important was when I suggested to my wife that we acquaint ourselves with that TV show everyone was talking about last year. The one with the superheroes. more…
Happy Halo Holiday!
Halo 3 launched last night all over the world, and has already set the world alight. Were you in line? Did you get a copy? Do you love Halo or hate it or not care about it one way or another? Much like this summer’s ‘Potter-mania’ it is hard not to have this game launch touch you one way or another.
GamerDad to ESRB: Why is Halo 3 Rated M-Mature?
In the four years since I launched GamerDad.com, we’ve only disagreed with the Entertainment Software Ratings Board a handful to times. We felt that The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion deserved an M-Mature ( the ESRB actually changed the rating soon after, but not because of us) and we’ve always felt that Microsoft’s best selling Halo series was far more PG-13 than Rated R – or to put it in ESRB speak, T-Teen versus M-Mature. Despite the purple and blue alien blood, Halo has always seemed so… tame to those of us actually familiar with M-rated fare. Well, Halo 3 comes out today and it’s sure to be a massive hit, but once again the ESRB has rated it M-Mature. I received my copy on Friday and I’ve played through most of the short single player campaign and I keep asking myself the same question, over and over again: Why is this game rated M-Mature? more…
GamerDad & The Stranger
I was going to spotlight this earlier – almost a month ago – but, y’know, a Quadruple Bypass kinda gets in the way of the best laid plans. Anyway, it’s a little out of date but Seattle’s premiere ultra-cool news daily, The Stranger, did a little daily write up of the Penny-Arcade Expo and in their Sunday coverage, they devoted most of it . . . to me! more…
Oh No! Cary Played Rumble Roses XX?
This long winded little article of mine should be mostly work safe, but the game it’s based isn’t kid safe, work safe, or in some cases, adult safe. Just warnin’ ya.
Toys from … I dunno where …

Well, GamerDad caught them all in his freelance gig working for Disney’s FamilyFun.com – the website to the million subscriber magazine you’ve probably paged through at your pediatrician’s office – click here for the complete list and lets use this space to talk about the best family Summer films. more…
Where the Rubber Meets the Road
It’s fairly easy to write the sentence, “We don’t expose any minors to rated M games.” And you can put it in all sorts of promotional materials, employee education stuff, and what have you. Everyone can piously say they’ve got it all figured out.
It’s the context, stupid
Team Fortress 2 has arrived, more or less, assuming you’re a PC gamer (and really, I don’t care if it’s coming for the 360 and PS3 – you should be playing with a mouse and keyboard. How’s that for controversy?) and assuming you’re willing to pay for a “beta”.
In my opinion, it revitalizes the team-based FPS genre, not because it adds lots of new features (though it does have several welcome neat touches), but because it goes back to basics. Back to fun. Back to meaty, bloody chunks of corpse flying around the screen. Violent, to be sure. So why don’t I think this is an M game?
