Drake’s Fortune = PS3 Owner’s Fortune
It’s always kind of sad when the PlayStation 3 gets a terrific exclusive. Games like Resistance are rare indeed and I want to tell everyone I know to go and buy them (Resistance is not for kids!) – but I can’t. All of my friends either have Wii, Xbox 360, handhelds or PCs. While it’s still not quite worth the price, the PS3 does have some great games, and now they have one of the “must plays” of the year in “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.”
Uncharted feels like one of those 1930’s movie serials that Indiana Jones and Lara Croft are based on. The game casts players as a two-fisted, acrobatic, but realistic and failable adventurer who has a name but might as well be called “everyman.” He has a sense of humor, but is never corny. He’s got boxing skills, but takes a licking. He tends to wobble on jumps, narrowly escaping death rather than whirling and spinning like the Prince of Perisa. In short, he’s awesome because he’s believable. Surrounded by lush jungle graphics, a thrilling story with lots of twists, turns, and explosions – Uncharted delivers. Now add something never seen in gaming, and that’s great writing. The game makes you care about the story and protagonists in a way most games never come close to.
It’s beautiful, powerful, the combat is satisfying and it packs a wallop of a story. Pity it’s stuck on the PlayStation 3 but at the same time, it’s nice to see the Sony fans have some bragging rights beyond Resistance: The Fall of Man.
Uncharted is rated T-Teen and GamerDad will likely give it the 14+ seal. It’s got a lot of violent combat, but the emphasis is on puzzles, story, and daring do. Terrific fun for teens and adults.

It’s in my Gamefly queue, I rather enjoyed the demo. Between this and Ratchet and a handful of decent backups (Heavenly Sword, Folklore, Warhawk) the PS3 does have a reason for existing.
I still don’t know why you like Resistance, though.

Well, I did write a review explaining that… What’s your problem with it? To me it’s about the setting, the design, the co-op, the graphics, and the “frantic action feeling.” Scary too. Great! A top FPS, imo.

I just got a PS3, because with the new models out you can actually get them for a semi-reasonable price. I got a used 20GB (the best value, IMHO — back-compat but no extraneous crap like wifi and card readers) for 320 bucks with an extra controller. Frankly, Ratchet sold me the system.
I’m really excited about Drake’s Fortune, though. As soon as I get done with Ratchet, I’m going to try the demo. Hopefully it will be fun for my wife to watch (I doubt she’ll be up to actually playing…).

For me, the PS3’s wireless networking was a key feature. It’s not in the same room as my DSL modem, so all I had to do was buy a $25 wireless router and bang! I’m online in my home theater (downloading lots of PS3 game demos, mostly).
Good to have choices, though. 🙂 (I also wanted the 60GB’s PS1 and PS2 compatibility, since I still have dozens of older games.)
The Uncharted demo rocks. The full game is definitely on my wish list.

I meant to also mention. . .I wish my HD-DVD player had wi-fi built in! I can’t take advantage of online content, and to update the firmware I have to either unplug it and take it into my home office or use my PC to burn the update to a CD.
Hopefully they’ll make a wi-fi attachment for the expansion slots.

I know what you mean. My wifi supports two iPhones, two Macs, a PC, an Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and occasionally the DS or PSP. GamerDad’s Fortress of Gamitude ™ is totally wireless baby!
Drake is great though. Seriously! Awesome stuff.
