Ask GamerDad 4/04/08

Another week, another Ask GamerDad feature over at WhatTheyPlay.com. This week we have a perturbed reader angry about spoilers – recommendations for DS games for a 6-year old (guest starring Maggie Bub, aka GamerGirl) – and three from our own message board weigh in to help with some very obscure computer networking stuff (<- more interesting than it sounds). Free at last, they took your life but they could not take your pride – U2

You know what I say about spoilers? If you don’t want a game spoiled for you, don’t go on the Internet! Sheesh. Informing parents about the content of a game is more important than getting a game spoiled for you. I get games spoiled for me all the time but I don’t blame anyone but myself for reading about it.
Oh, and by the way, Aeris dies, Sheik is really Zelda, Samus is a woman, Apollo Justice and Trucy are really… –Cary

I think you were absolutely right, GamerDad, in terms of spoilers. I am really bad in terms of intolerance to spoilers (it all goes back to my brother’s friend ruining the head popping out in Jaws back in ’75, but that is a different story … ).
But there is a time when spoilers are inappropriate – like mentioning that you are Reven in KotOR or that Aeris dies. Because there isn’t any ‘warning factor’ involved. Mentioning that completing Postal 2 means that your kid will be running around peeing Napalm and setting the town on fire and having screaming charred corpses around … somewhat different.
