Ask GamerDad: 4/18/08

Ask GamerDad this week is all about Myths, Misanthropes, and Animal Headed people. Here’s a sample:

“Liking this kind of game is dependent on believing in it. If you’re the type who looks for the wires, obsesses at how that magician did that trick, and simply won’t ignore the man behind the curtain. . . “

  1. Change “30” to “27” and “3 years/4 months” to “2.5 years/2 months” and that first question could have been about me. I think you nailed it with your DS suggestion (PSP also a good choice — that “suspend” button is a frickin’ miracle), but it still doesn’t take the sting out of missing out on some titles. If the goal is to “get in some game time”, your suggestions are great. But if you want to, for example, keep up on the JRPGs you used to love… well, good luck with that. Save points are few and far between, and some of them have inappropriate elements that force you to play when the kids are asleep.

I’ve worked it out with the missus where sometimes I can game for an hour or two after the kids go down for the evening, but I don’t get in nearly as much of that as I’d like. It’s just one of the sacrifices you have to make, I guess.

  2. Also: with that last question, do you think sometimes people send in “joke” questions? Seriously, if he knows how to email GamerDad, he should know how to type “Manhunt 2” into Google. WTF?

  3. James,
Yeah, you’re right about PSP. I neglected to mention that one.

And yes, I think I get a lot of fake questions and questions from kids pretending to be their parents and…

But WTP says their demographics are good, the column is helping people, and sometimes I’ll answer a stupid question so I can talk to everyone else reading.

  4. James: I would say you just have to be more picky. That sounds harsh, but you only have so many hours so you cannot afford the luxury of playing a mediocre 20-hour game you *might* like. You need to do more research, read more reviews, and be more selective. Then, as others say, it will ease up over time.
