Retro: GamerDad in the National Post

hndad.jpgIn 2005 GamerDad was profiled in Canada’s National Post newspaper. The National Post is a nationwide paper so, Welcome Canadian GamerDads! (GamerPeres, in Montreal!)Thank you to Adam McDowell for the phone call and for writing the story. Basically it covers, briefly, why I began GamerDad and some of my goals for the site.

There was a slight misunderstanding I want to explain. We discussed how the ESRB rates a WWII game like Medal of Honor: Allied Assault T-Teen despite having realistic death and a horrific re-creation of D-Day. Meanwhile Halo 2 is rated M-Mature because it has purple alien blood in it. Medal of Honor is MUCH more violent than Halo 2, so why is it Teen? What’s the difference? Blood. That’s one of my problems with the ESRB.

The author condensed these ideas to imply that: I prefer blood in war games because that’s more realistic.

Wrong.
He didn’t misquote me, but the context implies that I think games should be bloody. That’s not the case. My point was that simply removing blood from a realistic and violent wargame doesn’t make it safer. I actually think that violence – not blood – should be what the ESRB uses to determine the rating. I don’t like if/then ratings.

These things happen in the often low wordcount world of newspapers however, and I should know, I used to write for newspapers!

Anyway, I want to thank Adam and the National Post for the coverage and especially for including a picture of me and my young son. I look forward to helping my Canadian readers find great games for their kids!

iF ANYONE CAN FIND AN ARCHIVE OF THIS STORY SOMEWHERE (GOOGLE, NATIONAL PRESS ETC.,) LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW.
