Robolt (PS4, PS5, Switch)

Run, jump, and shoot robots in Robolt, a 2-D run and gun platformer.  It’s available on PlayStation consoles and Switch, but reviewed on PS4 here.

Controls are pretty straightforward.  Move left and right with the d-pad, one button jumps, and you shoot with the R2 button and use special limited weapons with the R1 button.  Travel left to right to reach the end doorway to beat the level.  Shoot or avoid robots along the way.  Pick up green coin things so you can buy upgrades like extra hits, stronger shots, and double jumps.  There are also hidden red squares to find, but I don’t know what they do.

This game is just full of problems.  Your character is so small and the backgrounds are so busy it’s hard to tell where you are most of the time.  Seriously, look at the screenshot I posted and try to find where your character is.  The camera moves up every time you jump, too, which makes matters worse.  Play control is a bit loose and you can barely hear any of the sound effects.  It feels like an unfinished game, really.

Kid Factor:

Robolt is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  You shoot at robots that explode when defeated, and that’s it.  Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, but not necessary just to play.  Younger gamers may find it too difficult.
