Knight’s Night! (PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, X/S, PC)
A knight must stop an evil wizard from doing something…evil in Knight’s Night! It’s a retro inspired 2-D precision platformer with black and white graphics that remind me of the games I used to play on my old Apple ][+ computer. It’s available on all current consoles and PC, but reviewed on PS4 here.
Your knight can run and jump, and later on you’ll get potions that let you double jump, dash, and air dash, too. I wish you could’ve started the game with all the abilities, though. You can hop on certain enemies, like mushrooms and wolves, to defeat them, but other things like spikes you must avoid altogether. If you pass by a tent with a campfire, that’s a checkpoint. If you lose all three of your hearts, you must start back at the beginning of the level or at the last checkpoint you reached. When you pass a checkered flag, the level ends and you move onto the next. There are hidden items for you to find, but they don’t really do anything but give you something extra to do. You get unlimited continues. These types of precision platformers are usually impossibly hard, but this one’s at least doable. It’s a bit bland and short and the ending is anti-climatic, but it at least serves its purpose.
Kid Factor:
Knight’s Night! is rated E-10 with an ESRB descriptor of Fantasy Violence. You just hop on enemies and defeated characters just disappear and that’s it. Reading skill is helpful for some of the text, but not necessary just to play. Younger gamers may need help with some of the tougher jumps, though.
