Afterplace (Switch, Mobile)
You wake up in a strange new world with monsters and crazy characters with no idea how you go there. Only thing you know is you can’t leave. So you must explore the ‘Afterplace” and find out how you got there. This is a retro 8-bit styled top down action adventure. It’s reviewed on Switch but also available on mobile devices.
You move around a top down world like a Zelda game. One button does a dodge roll and the other attacks with a weapon. Defeated monsters drop coins that you can use at shops to buy better armor, weapons, and other gear. You can also talk to people in towns and other places. The game doesn’t really give you much direction, you’re just tasked to follow your nose and figure things out on your own.
While I appreciated the open-endedness of this game, the lack of any clear goals made it hard for me to stay interested for long. This is one of those games that was designed by one person, too. Which is amazing, don’t get me wrong, but it also gives the game a bit of an amateurish feel to it, too. But it’s certainly better than what I could do. I got some Undertale vibes from this game, too, so if you liked that one, you might want to check this out as well. There’s just too much other things competing for my time for me to stay interested in a game like this right now.
Kid Factor:
Afterplace is rated E-10 with ESRB descriptors of Fantasy Violence and Mild Language. You hit little blocky monsters that disappear when hit. I didn’t notice any bad language in the text, but there is a lot of it so strong reading skill is needed. Near the beginning of the game, there is a guy that offers you drugs, though, so because of that and the lack of clear goals, this game is probably best for older gamers.
