Greetings from Liberty City!

The City is Beautiful. Glad You’re Not Here.

Where’ve I been? Where do you think? Liberty City. Ah… Liberty City. It’s sort of an “adult” vacation spot. Not a place to bring the kids. In fact, this sprawling metropolis is bereft of children or teenagers. That’s a good thing. Because there are a thousand stories in the naked city and all of them are M-Mature. It’s time to come home and I hate to admit it. . . I’ll miss these mean streets. I’ll miss my terrifying breakneck speeding through the Booth tunnel. Buzzing the top of the Statue of Happiness with a stolen heli-tour copter. Cranking up Vladivostock radio, digging some Reggae, or tuning in to the incomparable Lazlo to help drown out the gunfire, screams, and constantly whining police sirens. more…

Hop on the bus, Gus! Bus Driver (PC) Review

Have you ever wanted to drive a bus? With visions of a yellow school bus loaded with eighty screaming and yelling elementary school kids, my first thought was “NO!”, but as I asked my own kids they were very enthusiastic about giving it a try.

Review: Neverwinter Nights 2 (Mac)

Neverwinter Nights 2 (NWN2) arrived late in 2006 on the PC, and the Mac version took about sixteen months longer to arrive on Mac OS X.  In fact, the expansion for the PC game arrived before the Mac port, but unlike the expansions for the original Neverwinter Nights there is not a simple way to get ‘Mask of the Betrayer’ running on your Mac.  I had thoroughly enjoyed the PC version of NWN2 when it was released, declaring it the best RPG of 2006 over Oblivion and Gothic 3 despite the fact that it had a number of bugs and camera issues that took some patching to fix.  So I knew that the core of the Mac game would be very good, it was all about the port.  For those who have not played the original game I will run through a review of the entire game and also comment on things I noticed specific to the Mac version.

SNK Goodies

The renowned video game maker SNK is known for its fighting games with personable characters and other action-packed arcade favorites.  In honor of SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 being released on the PSP and PS2, I thought I’d briefly go over each game on the collection, share my own SNK opinions and experiences, and look at some other recent SNK collection releases.  And just a warning, if you don’t have any interest in SNK, this blog will bore you to tears (or make you learn something new).  So apologies in advance!

Import Game Review: Meccha! Taiko no Tatsujin DS: 7tsu no Shima no Daibouken

Taiko drums have had a long history in Japanese culture as they are used in festivals, parades, and even during times of war.  You’ve probably seen a Taiko drum before and not even known it.  They look like a big barrel tipped on its side.  Lately, Taiko drums have appeared in a series of popular music/rhythm video games from Namco.  First in the arcade, Taiko no Tatsujin (Taiko Drum Master) has since been on home consoles, with the latest one being a sequel on the Nintendo DS.  That’s the name of it up there in the title, but since it’s such a mouthful, from here on out we’re just going to call it Taiko DS 2.

Dungeon Explorer: Same name, Two games

Apparently there was a game called Dungeon Explorer released on the TG-16 back in 1989 that was also released on the Wii Virtual Console last year.  The game was a fairly blatant Gauntlet-clone with additional RPG elements and some nice varied locations, but nothing all that revolutionary even nineteen years ago – it is certainly not one of those historic gems that brings a nostalgiac tear to older gamers’ eyes.  So it is perhaps surprising that Hudson chose this franchise to resurrect for a pair of games on the DS and PSP bearing the same name but otherwise very different.  But neither new Dungeon Explorer: Warriors of the Ancient Arts game owes much to the original other than the moniker, and they are different enough to deserve their own reviews.

Review – Gears of War PC/Xbox360

gears_of_war_pc_two-640x.jpgWe’ve covered Gears of War in both flavors on the GamerDad main site but CrispyGamer has published my more long-winded take. CrispyGamer isn’t a content review site, so let me say to parents: It’s a very violent game that has players killing alien monsters – not humans. The tone is gritty and a little sophomoric and the multiplayer is rife with foul-mouthed brats who delight in killing their opponents with chainsaws. Fun for late teens and adults, but there’s better fare for kids. Hear is the full review!

Review – Sam & Max Episode 204: Chariots of the Dogs (PC)

pc_sammax204_chariotsofthedogs_box.jpgCan it possibly be true that we have passed the half-way point in the second season of Sam & Max?  Indeed, it is true – with the completion of this episode there is only one more episode to go until we reach the conclusion of Season Two.  And what a season it has been!  Telltale has managed to outdo themselves at every turn, mixing up the equation of what worked in Season One without compromising the quality of characters, writing or humor at all.  Now we have reached the fourth episode – Chariots of the Dogs – and the same amazing pace of hilarity continues without any sign of slowing!
