Dungeons & Dragons – Memory Lane

memorylane.jpgI’ve been planning on writing this for over four years now. Memory Lane is basically me picking over my childhood for, hopefully meaty, scraps of memory but my memory was rudely jogged yesterday. E. Gary Gygax passed away. Back in the early 80’s I got hooked into the D&D thing.

D&D Gary Gygax Dead at 69

No Joy in Green Bay

bubtv2FOX Sports announced today that Green Bay Packers QB Brett Favre is retiring. Thus ending the longest consecutive start streak of a QB ever, more records broken then I care to count, and a career that lasted well into his 30’s.  He went out slinging, his last pass was an overtime Interception in the NFC Championship but the weather was below zero and . . . we in our late 30’s can’t take the cold like we used to. I understood.

Return of the Doodle?

doodle.jpgWe never got around to reviewing it – shame on us! – but the DS game Drawn to Life is the kind of game we’d recommend to anyone who has kids. That’ll get even easier now that they’ve announced a sequel – and it’s based on Spongebob Squarepants. Due in the Fall, Drawn to Life: Spongebob is coming from THQ and will feature the nefarious Doodlebob as the enemy. Anyone else hearing that funky garbled doodle language from that classic episode? (No really, I can’t get it out of my head!)

Berzerk – Memory Lane

memorylane.jpg“Coin detected in pocket!”… Said the arcade machine. “What? Huh. Yeah!” I responded. Sure enough there was so I dropped it into the slot and I became Han Solo, for lack of a better persona, and stalked the corridors of some base flinging fiery ruin at the robots (a cross between Stormtroopers and Cylons, in my mind) that impeded my progress.“Intruder Alert! Intruder Alert!”

Dishwashers, Little Gamers, and JellyCars!

JELLYCARLast week, Xbox Live introduced a new feature (and if it’s not really new, it’s still new to me), called XNA Community. With XNA, people from all over can make little games and send them to Microsoft. And some of them they’ll put up as demos and maybe full games for everyone to play on Xbox Live! Now, I’m not exactly sure how the game making process of XNA works. I’ve been a gamer all my life, but I’ve no interest in making games myself. I’d rather just play them. But I do know you can now download seven new XNA demo games on Xbox Live right now! I figured I’d make a little blog about them. Now, keep in mind that these are demos of games that are works in progress, so anything negative I say about them isn’t really a bad thing. Just some things that might help improve the full copy of the game if it ever came to that.

The Microsoft Gamer Dad Incident

xboxgamerdad.jpgI’ve been feeling retrospective about GamerDad lately. Spending 4 years of your life doing something as tirelessly as I have tends to make things blur – so I thought I’d share my lowest moment with you, in case you were’t around to see it. WHAT HAPPENED? Xbox.com launched a Gamer Dad column, thus trading on all my credibility and accomplishments and creating confusion over who Gamer Dad really is . . . .

Cars DVD Review

Cars hit movie screens two summers back and it revved its way to the top of the box office with apixar_cars.jpg two-piston punch of typically charming Pixar story-telling and a heaping helping of automotive adoration.

The DVD of the film roars during the race scenes, yet retains its quiet soul and simple lessons, even on a small screen at home. In case you missed it on the big screen, the story is simple: Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is a hotshot racer in the famed Piston Cup. . . .

Convergence Devices Gone Wild!

Convergence has been a buzzword in technology devices for years – combining PDA features with phones or vice versa has generally been the focus of this convergence, but there are plenty of other possibilities. Take the flashlight, for example. They have been integrated with key chains, with utility tools, and more. But now they have gone to the next level …

Disney’s Ultimate Band?

Rock Band is great, one of my favorite games ever, so I was pretty interested to hear that Disney is cooking up a Wii and DS game called “Ultimate Band” that apparently will not include “expensive peripherals” (if you ask me, the expensive peripherals are exactly the point but, whatever) Click for full details. (Disclosure: I occasionally work for the Family Fun and Disney Family websites as a game reviewer.)
