GamerMom Update

GamerMom Update: DAY 17:  As you know, GamerMom fell and twisted her knee while attempting to rollerskate. What this means is that GamerMom – the bread-winner, care-taker, home maker, all-around-great gal, pants wearer of this family – now has to be served. And the kids and I are torturing her as much as we can.

The Cold Boy

This morning I got a reminder of how simple mistakes can have severe consequences. I dropped my kids off at school and on the way home I was shocked to see a boy, age 8, not wearing a coat, not wearing shoes, holding his hands up to stop traffic. Shocked because it was 18 degrees. A lady and I pulled over immediately (other people merely passed him by). The boy seemed dazed, had some scuffs and scratches and seemed scared.

GamerMom: The Update

As some of you know, and the rest can read a little further down the page, Linda, the GamerMom, twisted her knee real bad while at the world famous Rollero roller rink (of Cudahy, WI) while falling on her daughter. Basically Maggie and her skates became locked and Linda fell in a way that hurt her, but left Maggie unscathed. Maggie’s looking forward to skating again, so that’s all good, and Linda is getting used to being a patient. This is a very big deal.

GamerBoy: The Beginning

I’m the GamerDad, I’m an expert, 10 years professional experience, host of credits, blah, blah, blah. . . I’m also a gaming advocate and because of this most people assume that my kids play games ALL the time. Actually I’m willing to bet my kids play less than the national average and much less than most of my audience’s kids. The reason why has always been because it is my work. Because Linda isn’t much of a gamer (this is changing rapidly). And it is because I don’t like gaming when conversation could be had instead. I’ve been the stay-at-home parent but up until very recently, I didn’t game in front of the kids. I have an office, that’s what it’s for. more…

The Content of His Character

My daughter is 8 and my son is almost 6. He’s unaware of what’s going on in the world today, she’s aware but remarkably, blissfully, admirably nonplussed. I realize that while my mom and dad watched as beloved leader after beloved leader was shot down and removed from their destiny, and my wife and I grew up hoping but not really believing that we’d ever have a minority President, my kids are growing up in a world where that’s happened. I understand, I think, how they will see it. “Of course an Asian/Woman/Gay/Latino/Arab/Jew can become President dad. Stop living in the Stone Ages.” That makes me happy. No matter your affiliation, pay attention to this day. Whatever your ideology, if you’re a patriot, you want this guy to succeed. The US is in trouble. Lets cling to this hope while we can. Celebrate while we can. And wake up and realize that today is history. Today, no matter your politics, is a day to be a proud America. Today we have a President named Barack Hussein Obama, and think he was elected based on the content of his character. I’m proud to be an American.

Ask GamerDad 1/16/09

A New Year, a New Bi-week, and a New Ask GamerDad.  Why does it have the introduction from the Dec 23rd edition?  I have no idea. Someone at WhatTheyPlay is asleep at the switch. I’ll see what’s up with that. Until then, please read this one.  I tackle some very interesting letters. Letters that question my very existence!

Skate 2 & Roller-Mom

Yesterday I popped in EA’s new skateboarding game Skate 2. Which is a simulation game that lets players perform wild tricks. It’s got different controls than the Tony Hawk series, but that doesn’t matter for me. While the game is very good, I am very bad at it and mostly, for me, it’s an accident simulator. It’s a good game for teens and rated T-Teen but parents of younger kids should be aware that there’s a physics simulator in the game called “HALL OF MEAT.” In this tasty arena all you do is create horribly bone-shattering accidents. Sort of a skating what not to do. How that pain must feel? SHUDDER! Well, not two hours later, GamerMom learned the reality of it.

Heart: The Ins and Outs

They say a heart attack and quadruple bypass operation change a man. They also say if it happens to him when he’s young, the changes are greater, as is the challenge. I won’t mince words here, the challenge is Depression with a capital ‘D’ – there’s nothing like a brush with death, and in my case 6 months of additional constant pain due to complications, to make a man change his life. First off, GamerDad is still “In” – got it? I know I don’t post enough, I know this because there are so many great stories to tell you about gaming with children, but I’m finding writing difficult. So I’m moving slowly. Following this is a list of things I used to like – but now strangely don’t – and things I used to dislike which I now love. The Ins and Outs of my heart.

It’s time for “Cooking With Cary!”

This isn’t really a review of Personal Trainer: Cooking, just a fun story about me playing it. I got the game at a Black Friday online sale for only five bucks! You can’t get a real cookbook that cheap! It’s basically an interactive cookbook on your DS where you can view more than 200 international recipes and have a virtual chef call out the steps to cook your selected dish.

A PC for Me

It’s kinda ridiculous but my wife and I own 1 MacBook, 1 iMac, 2 iphones, all consoles, and a PC.  Most of my career was as a PC gamer. Starting in 1998 I worked for PCGamer, CGW, Strategy Plus, and a bunch of others that fell victim to HD console graphics. I loved my PCs and PC games but I always needed help. I’m not a tinkerer, I don’t like dip-switches, I couldn’t care less about the innards of my machine. Gimmie a good videocard, good sound card (this was a while ago) and tell me what game you want reviewed. . .
