Pixar Disappoints?
I could be wrong but the just announced slate from Pixar/Disney has me a bit apprehensive. I like Pixar because I never know what the next movie will BE! It’s always a surprise. Something new and risky. So, what’s coming soonish? Will it be insanely creative like Up or Monsters Inc? Will it be fun and simple like A Bugs Life and Cars? Will it be amazingly beautiful and artistic like Ratatouille, Finding Nemo and Wall-E? Will it be a load of just plain fun, Incredibles? Will it be comfortable? Toy Story 1 & 2? This summer we get Toy Story 3, then Cars 2, then Monsters Inc., 2, somewhere around then we get a remake of Winnie the Pooh and a Muppet Movie (those are through Disney). The only original film seems to be about a Bear & a Bow and that’s just putting that Disney bear cartoon – the one that wasn’t bad – in my head. Where’s the risk? Come on Pixar, don’t give up clearing the path. You’re not about exploiting your IPs.
Game Review: Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (DS)
Percy is a troubled kid who just can’t seem to fit in. But there’s a reason for that. One day, the creatures from Greek Mythology that Percy is studying come to life! Turns out that Percy is actually the son of Poseidon, Greek god of the sea. Someone has stolen Zeus’ lightning bolt, and Percy is to blame! Now the boy must use his new demi-god powers and rely on his newfound friends to save Mount Olympus and the world. Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief for Nintendo DS is an RPG based on the popular book and recently released movie of the same name.
Best Animated Film
The Academy has released their noms for Best Animated Feature – usually this came down to a no-brainer. Pixar wins! Except for the year when Shrek beat Monster’s Inc (which is a fact that grows more absurd each year), this has been Pixar’s main category. This year is different. This year there’s lots of competition.
That was a “BOY” movie, Mommy!
In my opinion, movies cost way too much nowadays. Seriously, if you take two people to a movie, you might as well buy the DVD. So usually I just wait until movies hit the dollar theater now. If I do see a regular priced movie, I try and see it at the early bird showing so I only have to pay five bucks for it. Here are a couple of movies I’ve seen recently at the dollar theater and early bird showings.
Game Review: The Wizard of Oz: Beyond the Yellow Brick Road (DS)
While The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was originally a book written by Frank L. Baum more than 100 years ago, this year marks the 70th anniversary of the more popular Wizard of Oz movie. And now you can explore the mystical Land of Oz with Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, Cowardly Lion, and Tin Man on the DS. And here’s the big surprise, Beyond the Yellow Brick Road plays like a well made RPG, similar to Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy!
Karen O. Wild Thing
Okay, I gotta think that most of you guys are fans of the Where the Wild Things Are book (by Maurice Sendak). 10 sentences that wouldn’t really work if it wasn’t for the inspired artwork that seems to have captivated a few generations. When I heard a movie was coming, the only reason I didn’t get angry about such a stupid idea is that Spike Jonze was directing. Then I learned that one of my favorite singers – Karen O of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs was doing the soundtrack and accompanying her would be a choir of untrained kids. I’ve heard the soundtrack, and its brilliant, but I just came across this little “making of” video (some tiny movie spoilers involved) showing Karen at work. Inspired stuff, folks. Enter this post to check it out!
Cary’s 2009 Summer Movie Round Up
Well, summer is wrapping up, and along with it wraps up the summer blockbuster movie season. I saw quite a few movies this past summer, so I figured I’d give out my brief impressions and opinions on them. Hey, you have a better idea for a blog topic? (I’m just joking). Anyway, here’s what movies I saw. Oh, and if you don’t want to wade through my entire long winded blog, but want to know about some good movies to take the whole family, just look for the paragraphs highlighted in green.
Howl’s Moving Castle
by Colleen Hannon
The hallmarks of any Miyazaki film are:
Stunning visuals
Intricately detailed flying machines
A plucky heroine
A complete disregard for any boundaries between real life and the imagination.
Meet the SimBubs (Sims 2)
Sims 3 is pricey and Sims 2 still looks good, has loads of extras and can be found pretty cheap. Plus, I got a few letters, and one forum post, complimenting my Sims 3 story and article (scroll down). I went to Yahoo to see if they still had my old Sims 2: Meet the SimBubs article up and ready to link. They didn’t. Ah well, hope you enjoy meeting a family based on my own
Aliens vs. Predator
![]()
Why is this movie rated PG-13?
Ever since the slimy black beast of Ridley Scott’s Alien and the deadly hunter in The Predator graced movie screens, science fiction fans have wondered which one would win in a fight? It’s one of those classic jumping off points for geek excess.
