This Week in Games: June 28 – July 4th

Welcome back to the latest edition of This Week in Games. Before getting to the games, I wanted to let you all know that this will be my last edition of This Week In Games. I wanted to thank Andrew for all the great years … and invite you to read my goodbye message at the end of the article. But for now … to the games!

We have a relatively solid release schedule that is full-up with movie tie-ins, including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. I know our family has been anticipating the new Harry Potter movie since it was delayed last fall, and the video game tie-ins have generally been fairly solid if unspectacular. As for the new Ice Age … my expectation after watching a pair of dreadful ‘exclusive clips’ this week is that regardless of how bad the game is, it will take little effort to be better than the movie! more…

This Week in Games: June 21 – 27

transformers_ps3_videogame
The summer blockbuster movie season is in full swing, and that means we are seeing more and more movie tie-ins. This week it is Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, a movie dominated by CGI robots and the kid from Even Stevens but whose media campaign spent more time on Megan Fox. The game is out on every platform, and as happened last time also gets TWO DS releases – one for Autobots and the other for Decepticons. That is what we call the Pokemon factor … and it seemed to work last time, as there was just enough differentiation to make it worth getting both if you liked them. more…

ghostbusters
Who ya gonna call? Yep – after delays, rumors of cancellations and more, we finally get the video game release of the classic Ghostbusters! Early reviews are calling iot solid if unspectacular on all of the platforms it is hitting (which means basically everything). Other than that … there are some other assorted games, including yet another entry into the Guitar Hero: Quest for Franchise Destruction series, and my ersonal pick – Dawn of Discovery, the latest entry into the excellent Anno series of simulation / adventure games. Check out the list! more…

This Week in Games: June 7 – 13

rockbandunplugged Have you recovered from all of the E3 buzz yet? The onslaught of promises that will never meet up with the hype? It was ironic that all week on CNN I was seeing a commercial that featured a salesman teasing with a massive toy truck for a little kid then when the kid signed to buy he got a colored-on piece of paper. Anyway, this week we have a pretty reasonable set of releases, with the violent sandbox multiplatform Prototype, as well as the multiplatform games Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10, Virtua Tennis 2009, and Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings leading the way. more…

This Week in Games: May 31 – June 6

thesims3Well, now … I’m mad at the industry for messing up the release schedule by releasing one of my most anticipated games of the year a week early. So while it shows up on this week’s list, Red Faction: Guerrilla for XBOX360 and PS3 is already out, with the PC version delayed to late August. The other huge release is sequel to the mega-franchise The Sims 3 for the PC … and in an amazing move, simultaneously released for the Mac! The other big release is the innovative Knights in the Nightmare for the DS. Oh … and another Naruto game – BELIEVE I! Check out the list! more…

This Week in Games: May 24 – 30

infamousHappy Memorial Day to one and all – and I hope everyone has taken a moment to appreciate some veterans! This week has one highly anticipated release … and other stuff. The big release is Infamous for the PS3, and the only other one of note is the sequel to the awful PSP game Astonishia Story, called Crimson Gem Saga. The early looks seem decent and the developers have been distancing themselves from the original, so perhaps there is hope.Check out the list! more…

This Week in Games: May 17 – 23

punchout2009Do you remember when the new releases coming each week had us thinking that 2009 would never see the typical spring and summer drought? Well, that seems like ages ago, as proven with yet another thin week of mediocre releases. Big releases other than the cover image? Probably the biggest are Bionic Commando for XBOX360 and PS3, the sequel Bionic Commando for the Wii, and another movie tie-in Terminator Salvation for PC, XBOX360 and PS3. Hopefully Jagged Alliance DS actually gets released this week! Check out the list! more…

This Week in Games: May 10 – 16

sacred2_consolesHappy Mother’s Day – hope you are doing something special for the mom’s and wives out there! I am rather thrilled this week to put Sacred 2 for XBOX360 and PS3 as the cover image for two reasons: first Ascaron is having financial troubles so I was concerned that it wouldn’t release at all, and second because early reports indicate it is as good as I indicated in my review of the PC version for VGBlogger. Other than that there is Battlestations: Pacific and a bunch of games making their scond or third appearance on the list. Hopefully some of them (and also last week’s Jagged Alliance DS) will be released this week! Check out the list! more…

This Week in Games: May 3 – 9

klonoawiiWhile my personal pick of the week is Jagged Alliance for the DS, I simply had to put up the picture of Klonoa for the Wii in honor of Cary! The other releases include new Fallout 3 DLC called Broken Steel and a Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian game for pretty much every platform. The final release of interest is the Wii ‘New Play Controls’ re-release of the fun GameCube game Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Check out the list! more…

This Week in Games: April 26 – May 2

stalin-vs-martiansI know that X-Men Origins: Wolverine is the big release this week … but how could I possibly resist putting the box for Stalin vs. Martians up front? X-Men Origins: Wolverine is being released for every platform known to man (I was honestly surprised there was no GBA version!), while Stalin vs. Martians is a quirky RTS game with a great sense of humor. Aside from those games, Velvet Assassin for the PC and XBOX360 has been highly anticipated and finally lands this week. There isn’t much more this week of note but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything interesting, so check out the list! more…
