Monkeying Around With Rhythm Heaven Fever
Epic Quest (Xbox 360, PS3)
Anyone remember Pinball Quest on the NES? Yeah, probably not. Well I do, because I’m weird. Anyway, it combined elements of RPG staples with pinball gameplay. Now Zen Studios is set to revisit that clever concept with Epic Quest, a new downloadable pinball table for Pinball FX2 on Xbox 360, and Zen Pinball for PS3 (360 version reviewed here).
The Simpsons Arcade Game (Xbox 360, PS3)
It’s here! It’s finally here! The four-player co-op side scrolling beat-em-up based on The Simpsons TV show, which tore up arcades in the early 90’s, is now available on a home console at last! Play as Homer, Marge, Bart, or Lisa as they tromp through Springfield trying to rescue baby Maggie from Smithers and Mr. Burns. You can download this arcade classic hit on Xbox 360 and PS3 (360 version reviewed here).
My Pet Puppy 3D (3DS)
Now you can become a puppy trainer on your 3DS! Feed, walk, clean, and teach tricks to all sorts of puppies with My Pet Puppy 3D. First, pick a breed and name your own puppy. After you pass the first test set of tricks to teach your own pup, you’ll be an official puppy trainer and can take on clients and help them teach their puppies and make everyone happy!
Puddle (Xbox 360)
Puddle is your typical “tilt the world around to move a body of liquid” action puzzle game (downloadable on Xbox 360). Use the L and R trigger buttons to shift the world left and right to avoid obstacles and make sure enough of your liquid reaches the exit. You’ll travel through various creative levels, including plumbing pipes, a plant nursery, chemistry lab, and even inside the human body! It’s similar to games like Sony’s Loco Roco, Nintendo’s Fluidity, or like a 2-D version of Mercury.
Scarygirl (Xbox 360, PS3)
Based on a graphic novel I’ve never heard of, Scarygirl is now a downloadable video game on Xbox LIVE and coming soon to PSN (360 version reviewed here). In the game, a young girl with a tentacle for an arm was abandoned, but a friendly octopus took her in and named her Scarygirl. Blister the octopus clothed her with outfits he found under the sea, so she dresses like a pirate. He even built a nice house for her. But when Scarygirl keeps having prophetic dreams, a guru bunny tells her to go on a journey. Now you can help Scarygirl on a 2-D platforming adventure!
Zen Pinball 3D (3DS)
The Crazy Characters of King of Fighters XIII
Well folks, it’s time for my King of Fighters XIII blog. We’re mostly going to look at the different characters in the game, but I’ll warn you right now that this’ll be a pretty silly blog with my crazy observations about all the characters. I didn’t feel like doing too much research on them, so it’ll mostly be whatever thoughts go around my crazy head as I played the game. So think of this as an inside look as to all the silly thoughts that run through my head when I play one of these kinds of games.
Choplifter HD (Xbox 360, PS3)
Ahh, Choplifter. You and I go waaaay back. A lot of people think Choplifter started out as a Sega arcade title, but I remember playing it before that, on our first computer: an Apple ][+. This PC version of Choplifter was all black and white, and I was only about kindergarten age so it was a little hard for me to wrap my little head around some of the more complex helicopter controls (it wasn’t really that complex, though). But I did get the basic idea of the gameplay: pilot a helicopter from left to right and rescue little people on the ground while blowing up tanks and planes. Just don’t shoot the little houses the people lived in! Now, nearly 30 years later, you can relive this classic in high-def with Choplifter HD, a downloadable title on PSN and Xbox LIVE (360 version reviewed here).
Fortune Street (Wii)
As a boardgame aficionado, I was excited to try out Nintendo’s new boardgame-oriented game for the Wii, Fortune Street. Fortune Street is a “true” boardgame and doesn’t rely on skill challenges, as one would find in Mario Party. Instead, one to four players (at home or online) participate in a Monopoly-esque game of rolling dice, buying properties, and investing in stocks and upgrades. The first player to reach a minimum net worth (or the highest value when the first player goes bankrupt) wins the game. I admit I’m starting from a lukewarm opinion on Monopoly, but Fortune Street takes the luck element from Monopoly and steps it up. This is the wrong way to go, completely overwhelming any of the few decisions presented to players during the game. A game of Fortune Street can take over an hour to play, far too long for a game where one’s fate relies so heavily on the luck of the dice. However, Fortune Street could be a good purchase for someone looking for a boardgame like atmosphere on the Wii, where nearly anyone in the family has a decent chance of winning.
