Welcome to GamerDad: Gaming with Children. My name is Andrew S. Bub - the GamerDad - and I've been writing about videogames, movies, and children for over 15 years now. After working as a magazine journalist, I switched gears to write about how media violence affects children, educating parents about them, and working closely with magazines, newspapers, major retailers and even politicians. GamerDad is an internationally recognized expert in this field. Games, movies and media are fun, kids and families love them, they aren't going away. So join me in cutting through the hype and lets have a real conversation about the things that matter: Video Games, Violent Media, and their supposed effect on children and families.

Waxing Rhapsodic
Last week Rhapsody, the pioneering online subscription music service, announced it was opening up a DRM-free MP3 store. DRM, or Digital Rights Management, is a technology used to control access to digital media files (*** more below). They say they are ’embracing the iPod’ after years of competition. This puts them in competition with the behemoth iTunes Music Store and Amazon.com’s DRM-free music store among others. So what’s the deal? more…
RETRO – Resolutions for a Gaming New Year
At the very end of 2005 I wrote an article about gaming resolutions for 2006. Now, two years later, it is time to revisit those resolutions and update them based on what I have learned since. While I pore over my performance during the past couple of years, take a few minutes to re-read the original article. Then I’ll chime back in with some new thoughts and some self-flagellation regarding my ability to take my own advice … more…

I’m a nerd. Which is probably why I this as a weekly feature around the time when GamerDad launched.

Another Chapter in Gaming Comes to a Close
OK, that sounds more dramatic than the reality of the situation – video arcades have been a dying breed for a long time now, but a few recent articles have caused me to reflect a bit on my own history with arcades and their impact on my life.
Second Hand Lions
Second Hand Lions – “I see old people” with Robert Duvall in a perfect role – yep, Tyrion liked it just fine in his review (recovered from GamerDad).
Second Hand Lions
by Tyrion Lannister
“I’m Hub McCann. I’ve fought in two World Wars and countless smaller ones on three continents. I’ve led thousands of men into battle with horses and swords, artillery and tanks. I’ve seen the headwaters of the Nile and tribes of natives no white men had ever seen before. I’ve won and lost a dozen fortunes, killed many men, and loved only one woman with a passion”
Ask GamerDad 7/04/08
The July 4th edition of Ask GamerDad has soared, dazzled and landed. Click here to ooh and ahhh. This week I, somewhat controversially, tackle a variety of patriotic subjects. Ranging from Sid Meier’s Civil War to Lt. Col. (Ret) David Grossman, to wargaming during wartime. Fun stuff! Grab a hotdog, swat the mosquitoes and enjoy the picnic.
Happy 5-Year Anniversary
In late June 2003, around Father’s Day, GamerDad was launched. We’ve passed that landmark, we’re 5 years old, and that makes us the oldest GamerParenting website. We coined the terms, we guided the argument, and we’re still going strong. GamerDad produces daily blog content, reviews, ideas, and advice and a clear cogent defense of video games that remains untainted and independent. That’s not going to stop now. No way! Enjoy your barbeque, enjoy your family, make some fireworks of your own with the video games of your choice. Happy Anniversary GamerDad.com, happy anniversary United States of America! Happy Independence Day and game with children along with us!
