Duty Calls 4

Just finished Call of Duty 4 and boy are my eyes tired. The game is seriously good looking and that makescall_of_duty_4_013.jpg the game all the more frightening. You play several characters – some of whom die from your perspective – and since these SAS and US Marine boys look and sound a lot like our own real-life boys currently in harm’s way due to “stop loss,” the game feels more Mature than the gore level, language, and blood netted it an M from the ESRB.

The game isn’t actually all that gory. There’s not a lot of blood, I mean compared to a T-rated war game. Gore only appears briefly. You can kill dogs by snapping their necks… that might be it. So why isn’t the game rated T-Teen?

Because the subject matter is Mature. Call of Duty 4 deals with terror from the Middle East and horror from Russia. Nukes are on the table and the story it tells pits US and British forces in a coalition of the willing against these rogue threats.  The action is intense, movie-like, and can best be described as “heavily scripted.” (Gamer shorthand for action that’s predetermined. Run into the room and the bad guys will always tip the table over and throw a grenade – that sort of thing.) This is the first game I’ve ever played that showed me death up close. It’s truly an interactive movie.

I’m about to review the game but for now….

I’m thinking I need a new Age Seal.  16+ or something.  Let me just tell the gamer parents out there that Call of Duty 4 is deeply intense and affecting and that’s why it’s rated M-Mature. If your teenager is deep and mature enough, this is a very memorable and worthwhile game. A savage story of our times.

  1. I have to agree with you! I believe it’s the only game I’ve played so far that I actually felt for the characters. The level of realism is way up there to me compared to other FPS games. I mean, hitting an enemy in the leg only to watch them fall and try crawling to cover while still shooting at you.

  2. suitable for a 14 year old?

  3. Oh and he enjoys war movies for they’re historical purposes. His favorites are band of brothers and black hawk down.

  4. I have Halo 3 and I hear swearing all the time at school and im not affected by it . Im also allowed to watch all PG-13 movies and i participate in many sports. I know whats going on in the world today like in Iraq and I know some of the bad things that are happening. I have Call of Duty 2 and I get great grades at school. One more thing, I do have Xbox Live and I have heard that Call of Duty 4 has multiplayer better than that of Halo. So, do you think a mature 14 year old who is allowed to play other violent games (With the exeption of GTA and Gears of War) should be allowed to get Call of Duty 4? Most of my friends are allowed to play games like this but my parents can be strict about it sometimes. If you could, please reply back ASAP so I can get in the action soon! Thanks!

  5. Oh and one correction. I said a “mature 14 year old”, im actually 13.

  6. I am a mature boy looking to buy the game COD4. I have played this game and other FPS’s at my friend’s houses many times and it has not affected me yet. I read the newspapers every day and understand the horrors of the war in Iraq, the constant fighting in Isreal, and the invasion of Georgia, and I strongly oppose them. I can see all PG-13 movies. I work hard to earn A’s and B’s in school, I participate in many sports, and I understand how my very regulatory Dad might want not to allow this game into the house. However, I strongly believe that I am perfectly mature enough to play a game like this. I have already seen the nuclear scene, and was unaffected by it. I do understand there is blood in the game but in the midst of a battle, you can hardly notice it. My dad is very regulatory of my electronic habits and I’m sure that he would make sure that I dont play very much. It is mainly a social device anyway, to use when I have friends over. So, could you please report back to me ASAP, because I enjoy this game very much, and i need some help in convincing my Dad to let me buy this game.

  7. I noticed in the review on the old sight it says the game has F words. It doesnt. 😐

  8. Man, this game looks good.I don’t really see why the S word is different from words like bastard, hell, and son of bitch.I play halo 2.
