4th Time is the Charm – Newest D&D Released

It’s here! After nearly a year-long media blitz, the complete 4th edition of Dungeons and Dragons releases today. Gamers itching to try out the new version of this classic (paper and pencil) RPG can get all three books at their local store.

Players will want to reference the Player’s Handbook, while DMs running their own games will also need to pick up the Dungeon Master’s Guide and the Monster Manual. For those who want to try before they buy, be sure to stop by your local game store tomorrow (Saturday, June 7th) as that is officially Worldwide Dungeons & Dragons Game Day (or WWDDGD for short!) Many game shops are hosting the event where gamers can come in and play through a short module to get a taste for some of the new rules. Wizards of the Coast is providing everything you need to try out the game, although I’m sure Hardcore gamers will be bringing their own dice! I, myself, will be DMing a few players in a short module at the local game store… I’m scheduled to be running the “beginner’s game” – lets hope I don’t accidentally kill them off!

I’ll be giving the new rules set a more complete review once I have time to check out all the new books. They have supposedly streamlined many of the more fiddly bits of the game while simultaneously trying to up the action-quotient of combat. There is even a fun little report online of a gamer going through the first 4th edition module with his 7 year old son! Apparently the son did just fine running all five of the player characters…

Some time next month I’ll also revisit the game and provide a commentary on the online support for the game. The online portion of the new 4th Edition rules is supposed to be a very big thing, while the rulebooks are being released today, the online support portions of the new rules set will be released in stages.

So, what are you doing still reading this? Go out there and follow someone carrying a cloth bag full of rattling dice… I’m sure they’ll lead you to a local game store where you can check out the new books for yourself.
