This Week in Games: Jan. 25 – 31

Not too much of note this week. The two biggest releases this week are the multi-platform Afro Samurai and Coraline, both based on licensed franchised – the first a cartoon and the second the upcoming stop-motion film. Thanks to all who chimed in with their ‘now playing’ lists … it is great to see what everyone is enjoying! Check out the list!

  • Afro Samurai
  • MLB Front Office Manager

As for last week … the multi-platform Skate 2 has shown to be a nice addition to the series and loads of fun, while the PSP game Star Ocean: Second Evolution is very much an average experience that is better than the first but not all that great. I have now had the chance to play some of the PC version of Mirror’s Edge and found it to be loads of stylized fun , but light on the plot and replayability. But given my penchant to sniff out potential ‘console-itis’, I was pleased that it was a great game that felt custom tailored for the PC.

What I’m Currently Playing:

  • PC: Rise of the Argonauts – I really can’t wait until I finish the game, submit my review, and delete it forever …
  • PC: Arcanum – it is amazing how much longer it takes when you really read everything on screen.
  • Mac: Call of Duty 4 – someone was asking about performance and settings … and I ended up playing through the whole thing again …
  • PSP: Star Ocean: Second Evolution– very similar to the first with enhanced everything … but still not a great game.
  • DS: Moon – got stuck in a vehicle sequence with a poorly timed auto-save and had to restart. Love the game, hate the driving parts.
  • DS: Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Jedi Alliance– just starting – you know it is bad when your kids aren’t even interested!

Enjoy gaming!

  1. Only games I’m interested in this week are the Wii Ultimate Shooting Collection and PSP DJ Max Fever. –Cary

  2. … which is actually a repeat from last week – apparently it didn’t come out. So I don’t know if it will actually land this week either.

  3. Everything I’m playing is on the PS3–Fallout 3, Burnout Paradise, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Oblivion GotY Edition. Mostly Burnout Paradise, though.

  4. I’ve heard some very passionate love/hate arguments about the new Burnout … what are your thoughts?

  5. Paradise is great. Hard, but great.

  6. I love Burnout Paradise; but, then, I’ve never played any of the other Burnout games so I do not have any vested interest in the series. It’s an excellent arcade racer, with the most glaring flaw being the lack of a restart option (which will be fixed in the Feb 5 patch). It has a large and diverse stable of cars, the PSN community is active and Criterion is continuing development (several DLC packs are coming within the next few months, including a massive expansion of the game city). It plays remarkably smoothly and the graphics are amazing. I picked up the game when I bought the PS3 and it immediately sold me on the console.

  7. Burnout is great – unless you like co-op. Co-op Burnout is excellent, a cornerstone of the series, and it’s gone here. Sad, sad, sad. That said, Revenge can be had for cheap and with the crash modes and different courses is worth buying even for those who’ve got Paradise.

I’m playin’ Call of Duty 5, Farrcry 2,c and with my lil sister Aubrey I’m playin’ Super Princess Peach, Elite Beat Agents and Nintendogs. She’s 9. I’m 15. I love her.

  8. Same-machine co-op is gone; but, the online play is excellent. I’ve thoroughly beaten the offline game; but, I keep playing online because it’s so much fun.
