This Week in Games: April 12 – 18

demigod_boxWasn’t it just last week I was saying that the releases were all about the DS & PC? Well, that continues to be true this week! The DS has some solid releases for everyone to play on their new DSi such as Dark Spire and C.O.R.E. while the PC has some interesting stuff such as Demigod from Gas Powered Games, whose previous works include Dungeon Siege I & II and Supreme Commander and the unfortunate Space Siege … so we hope this is much better. There isn’t much more this week, so check out the list!

As for last week … well, not so great once again. The big multi-platform releases The Godfather II and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena were both very average, which was also true of the PC games Elven Legacy and Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor. Probably the best new release was the DS game Rhythm Heaven,

I have very much been enjoying the DSi. Beyond the fun little music and photo stuff, the build is very nice and the added screen real estate is appreciated.

What I’m Currently Playing:

  • PC: Elven Legacy – th eshine has worn off somewhat, but I am still enjoying the turn-based battles, just not so much the turn-limits for missions!
  • PC: Neverwinter Nights 2: Mysteries of Westgate – settled back into a long play session with this and it continues to be a great experience whose only drawbacks are related to the core NWN2 engine.
  • PC: The Last Remnant – pretty typical jRPG experience, nice looking game, too many cutscenes. It feels like a huge game and I’ve put in tons of time and barely scratched the surface!
  • PC: Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor – after loving the original and first expansion I’m rather disappointed, as the new content adds little and is over too fast.
  • PC: Hard to Be a God – don’t know if this import will ever hit the US, but I’m glad I grabbed a UK release. Loads of dialogue & translation issues, but the nice strategic action-RPG combat with solid mounted battles is loads of fun and worth the price alone.
  • DS: Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars – still haven’t completed anything, but am getting close enough that I really don’t want it to end yet …
  • DS: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time – I liked teh first DS game, but this one is leaving me flat so far.

Enjoy gaming!

  1. How are you playing Mysteries of Westgate? It hasn’t been released.

  2. I’m playing:

    House of the Dead IV
    Madworld
Call of Duty WaW (cause I watched The Thin Red Line recently and am currently revisiting Band of Brothers. )
    Company of Heroes

–I think watching Band of Bros has made me realize why I don’t much like Company of Heroes. I don’t like the scale and I don’t like the way they chose to allocate resources. Control points? Weak. WWII were battles of fear and attrition. Of taking enemy positions and then moving the front forward. Could somebody update Combat Mission with Company of Heroes graphics?

  3. Well, I wrote too soon. Just got Tales of Valor and it looks like they went in a new direction – and it’s the direction I want to go. Smaller units, strategic scenarios, smaller scale. Back to the war.

  4. Re: ‘huh’ – I’m fortunate enough to be reviewing MoW, which has been ready for a few weeks but held back due to international negotiations between Atari & Hasbro and who knows who else …

Re: ‘GamerDad’ – I’m glad you like Tales of Valor. I think it is good, but after the main game and first expansion don’t find it gives me all that much to work with. The ‘smaller’ thing goes right to the content … of which there just isn’t enough. Still better than most every other RTS, just would have liked more.

  5. Hi Gamerdad,

My dad will not let me play C.O.R.E. on my new DSi. I’m 11 years old and i will be 12 next month. It only says Blood Gore and Language my Dad says “No because it is rated “M”) But yet he bought me inFAMOUS for my PS3 and that has Drugs gore EXCESSIVE swearing and more violence than you could imagine. I have played games like starcraft which are just as bad if not worse. I also am allowed to watch any PG-13 movies.

Do you think i should be allowed to play C.O.R.E
