Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Cary is Muddled by Marvel

Last time on my blog I talked about all the Capcom characters in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 (please read it if you haven’t already), so now we’ll go over the Marvel side. Now, keep in mind that I’ve never really gotten into comic books at all, and since I’m too lazy to do research, my silly observations on each character may sound very much uninformed. So that’s where you all come in. If you like comics and know a lot about Marvel characters, feel free to fill me in and correct my assumptions of each character on the list. It would be much appreciated. I have lots of friends who are into comic books, so every so often I’ve TRIED to get into them, too. But I just can’t. But I might try again soon since I hear Boom Comics is making some based on two of my favorite cartoons: Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers and Darkwing Duck. I think the only comic book series I ever REALLY got into was Sam & Max. But anyway, here are the Marvel characters in MvsC3.

She-Hulk

“Hey Flagman, who pretty lady?” Sorry, that’s a Dexter Lab Justice Friends reference there. I have decided that she is my favorite Marvel character in this game. Before I played MvsC3, I didn’t even know there was such a thing as She-Hulk. So is there like a whole family of Hulks? Baby Hulk? Hulk-dog? I imagine She-Hulk is He-Hulk’s wife or sister or something, right? Anyway, there are three reasons why I like She-Hulk in this game. One, she’s a strong lady. Two, she’s my favorite color (green). And three, her ending made me very happy. You see, I’m a big Phoenix Wright fan and really wanted to see him in this game. So in She-Hulk’s ending, She-Hulk is a judge and Phoenix and Miles Edgeworth are the lawyers! But they get all scared when she uses her gavel and accidentally breaks the desk! So if I can’t play as Phoenix Wright, at least they can still be in the game thanks to her. She even references Phoenix Wright in one of her win quotes. I’m guessing when she’s not picking up cars with one hand, She-Hulk is a lawyer or judge, am I right?

Phoenix

Now see, this was the cruelest thing Capcom could have done. Imagine seeing me, scrolling through the list of playable characters as I’m about to start a game of MvsC3 for the first time, and getting all excited when I see this name pop up. Did Capcom really put Phoenix Wright in the game? Nope, Phoenix is just some dumb woman who can poop out firebirds and stuff. Boo!

Hulk

I guess since I talked about She-Hulk, I should talk about Guy-Hulk, too. He’s pretty popular, so I already knew who he was. Guy who gets angry and turns big and strong and green. I saw the first live action Hulk movie and thought it was horrible. Didn’t they make a second one? The first one left such a sour taste in my mouth I didn’t even bother with it. Anyone remember the live action Hulk TV show from the 70’s? (I think I’m aging myself here) I was only a little kid, so I barely remember it. But I recall it was pretty dopey.

Captain America

I don’t know much about this guy, but it’ll be fun to learn more about him when they come out with that new live action movie. I seem to remember watching a really old live action Captain America movie that was REALLY bad a long time ago. I guess the social-political history behind this character is kind of interesting. I like the old Captain America and the Avengers arcade game because you can pick up soda machines and all the Engrish.

Deadpool

This is brother Jeff’s favorite character. Aside from being able to break the fourth wall, I’m not sure what his super power is. And yes, he does pick up the life bars and hit people with them. He says a lot of funny stuff in the game, but when it comes to fourth wall breaking, nobody beats Sam & Max.

Dr. Doom

I’m not completely sure of my memory, but I think he was the bad guy in one of the Fantastic Four movies. He looks like a metal skeleton guy with a hood. And with a name like Dr. Doom, he’s pretty much forced into being a villain.

Dormammu

It’s hard to take a bad guy seriously with a name like that. A friend of mine says he’s a villain in the Ghost Rider comic, which makes sense because I remember there being a guy with his head on fire on the movie preview. Felicia cracked me up in the game when she fought him and said, “Hey mister, your head’s on fire!”

Iron Man

I know about this guy pretty well because of the recent movies. I felt sorry for him in the MvsC3 intro, though. Mean ol’ Morrigan.

Magneto

I think I remember this guy being an X-Men villain. I know how to defeat him real easily. Just get a refrigerator and an A+ report card. Magneto will just stick to it!

M.O.D.O.K.

So he’s a giant flying barrel with a big face. What’s his power? Taking big bites out of sandwiches? I think he’s supposed to be a joke character.

Sentinel

He’s just a big robot. I did like what he does in Tron’s ending, though.

Shuma-Gorath

He’s one of the DLC characters. I remember him from MvsC2, but he’s just a giant octopus. What’s his power? Tasting good deep fried and served as an appetizer at Italian restaurants?

Spider-Man

This guy is also super popular, so I know about him. Never was much of a fan, though. I didn’t like the live action movies as much because all that swinging around made me dizzy. I barely remember him being in skits on The Electric Company, too. Anyone else remember that? I hope I’m not just imagining things.

Storm

I remember her from the X-Men movies. I thought it was kind of gross when her eyes would get all white, though.

Super-Skrull

A friend told me this is a Fantastic Four villain who has all the powers of the good guys. But in the game, I’ve only seen him use stretchy powers. He doesn’t turn into fire or a pile of bricks or anything.

Taskmaster

This guy has a sword and a shield and a skeleton head. So he’s basically Skeletor with a name that sounds like it belongs on a cell phone or laptop.

Thor

One day the Norse god of thunder mounted his trusty steed and with a mighty yell said, “I’m Thor!” Then his horse turned to him and said, “Well, thit on the thaddle, thilly!” Aren’t they making a live action movie about this guy soon? I guess I’ll learn more about him then. Did the other Norse myths get their own comic? Does Thor’s comic have Vikings and Valkyries? I think Valkyries are cool.

Wolverine

Yeah I know all about this guy because of the movies. Aside from putting shish-ka-bobs on his claws, I can’t think of anything funny to say about him.

X-23

She’s like a girl Wolverine. And she needs a better name than that. I would name her Ms. Wolverine. She’s really pretty in the game, but also very mean.

Oh yeah, and Galactus is the last boss.  I think he’s from Marvel, too.  He’s really big.  I bet you don’t get to play as him.  Just punch and kick his torso to save the Earth!

Conclusions

And that’s all the Marvel characters in the game. I really couldn’t think of any other Marvel characters I’d like to see as DLC. Maybe Psylocke, because sometimes I would pick her in MvsC2 because I liked her purple hair. I know Marvel did some Ren & Stimpy comics back in the day, and even did one called Powdered Toast Man vs. Spider Man (I have that issue…somewhere). So Powdered Toast Man would be a funny (albeit impossible) DLC, too.

My favorite comic book super heroes actually come from DC, not Marvel. Believe it or not, I think my favorite is Batman, which is strange because he’s so dark and gothic, which is nothing like me! But I really liked the Batman cartoon from the 90’s, and the newer live action Batman movies have been really good, too. Superman is also kind of cool, I guess. Anyone remember the last live action movie: Superman Returns? I loved Lex Luthor’s sidekick in that movie, she was so hilarious. If I were a bad guy, I would want a sidekick like her around.

I know they’re not Marvel and Steve Purcell would never allow them to be, but who I would really like to see as DLC in MvsC3 is Sam & Max. I think they would be hilarious characters in a fighting game. But oh well. Anyway, in the comments section, let me know who your favorite Marvel characters are in MvsC3. And what Marvel characters would you like as DLC? And like I mentioned before, if you want to fill me in on any facts about the characters I went over, please do that, too. Later! –Cary

  1. Don’t be too down on the new Hulk movie – the first one was total garbage, but the next one had nothing to do with it. New cast, director, etc… And actually pretty good.

  2. She Hulk got a blood transfusion from Bruce Banner (The Hulk) and that’s where her hulk powers come from. There’s not a hulk dog that I’m aware of.

X-23 is a clone of Wolverine, apparently they adopted each other as Dad/Estranged Daughter.

  3. Deadpool is kind of an anti hero. He’s a mercenary that beats up on wolverine all the time. He had lung cancer and tried to get artificial healing mutant powers to cure it but something went wrong and he got cancerous scars all over his body. He can only teleport via his gadget on his belt and is mainly a master of swords and guns. I was devastated to see what they did to him at the end of x-men origins. I hope the movie they are bringing out with Ryan Reynolds as the star will do the character more justice. Cause deadpool is awesome…
