Game Review: Chime Super Deluxe (PS3)

Chime Super Deluxe is a block puzzle challenge that’ll please fans of games like Tetris and Lumines. The new ‘Super Deluxe’ version, now downloadable on PS3, adds new songs, levels, and multiplayer modes.

Just like any other good puzzler, Chime Super Deluxe is easy to learn but hard to master. You must place shaped blocks onto a grid playfield. When a 3×3 square or larger is made, it’ll be ready to clear. Before it does, a meter will fill up in the square, which gives you an opportunity to build onto it for more points. Make adjacent squares to increase your combo score, too.

Just like Lumines, a line goes from left to right over the playfield. When it passes over the 3×3 or larger squares that you’ve made, they’ll disappear. Underneath where the disappeared square was, the tiles will change color. Make 50 percent of the tiles change in a given time to unlock the next song. Make 100 percent of the tiles change and you’ll go to a new playfield under the same tune for more points and challenge. Chime Super Deluxe features single player, and competitive and co-operative multiplayer modes, too.

The songs in the game are mostly techno electronic stuff. As you place blocks on the field, they’ll add notes and instruments to the songs as the clearing line runs past them, so you’re making your own music as you play. Most of the songs are pretty good, but a couple are annoying and one sounds like cats howling in pain (Silence, I’m referring to you). But other than that, Chime Super Deluxe is a worthy download if you enjoy puzzlers like Lumines, Tetris, or Loopz (anyone remember that one?).

Kid Factor:

While the game is hard to master, even young kids can grasp the simple concept, and the challenge isn’t too frustrating for them to pass levels. Families can enjoy the multiplayer modes, and reading skills aren’t necessary to learn how to play. Chime Super Deluxe is rated E for Everyone.
