Reader Review: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D (3DS)

One of the most intense titles in the Metal Gear game series: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, is about to get more ‘in-your-face’ in 3D on the Nintendo 3DS handheld. My brother Jeff is a Metal Gear Solid fanatic, so he gets the honor of doing a reader review. So here’s his take on Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater 3D.

With all of Metal Gear Solid 3’s iconic cigar throwing and pistol spinning, it was only a matter of time before it got the 3D treatment. Metal Gear Solid 3D was sort of a surprise after the recent release of the Metal Gear HD Collection, but it is an amazing addition nonetheless. The 3D brings some depth to the jungle crawling as branches and leaves brush past you, as well as making the cutscenes just pristine. It even keeps the graphics from the HD collection so it isn’t just playing the original but in 3D. The menu is also really accessible because it is right on the bottom screen and you can just touch anything on it to radio people, change camouflage, equip items, etc. My absolute favorite part of this game is the new “camera camouflage”, where you can take a picture of anything using the 3DS’ camera and it will make a new camouflage for Snake to wear.

I didn’t see any real problems with the game, but there are a few things that you have to get used to. There is no right stick on the 3DS so you have to use the buttons as a sort of D-Pad. This makes aiming a little hard to get down at first. Some of the balancing portions of the game are difficult to get used to as well because you have turn the DS itself. Also, if you are used to playing Metal Gear Solid on the TV, then the small screen may make seeing enemies and obstacles more difficult. –Jeff Orth

Kid Factor:

Metal Gear Solid 3D is rated M for Mature with ESRB descriptors of Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Language, and Sexual Themes. Because the game is like an intense rated R action movie, it’s really best for older gamers. Plus, Metal Gear games are pretty difficult, too. (Kid Factor and intro by Cary Woodham)
