Choo Parr (iPad)

CHOO_BOXChoo Parr is a free-to-play mobile game for iOS and Android devices (reviewed on iPad here).  In the game you play as a flying dragon, hovering above the skies of random locations like a castle, Wild West town, arctic iceberg, beach, and more.  Your job is to collect equally random objects falling from the sky for points.  But watch out for dangerous items cascading to the ground like bombs, grenades, and swords.  Get hit twice by one of those and it’s Game Over!

The controls are so simple that they explain everything on the loading screen.  Tap the touch screen to flap and gain altitude.  It’s similar to how you control the ostriches in Joust.  And tilt the tablet to move left and right.  And that’s it.  As you play more and more, you’ll unlock different falling objects that’ll give you more points.  Try to catch the same kinds of goodies in a row, or gather a whole bunch without getting hit for bonus combo points. Be on the lookout for special crates that’ll refill your life or destroy any dangerous objects on screen.  The longer you play, the more stuff falls on you!

While I do find the randomness slightly appealing, as it reminds me of some of the crazy stuff you’d have to do in arcade games when I was a kid, Choo Parr is too simple for its own good.  It’s a free-to-play game, so you have to deal with ads, although you can pay to remove them.  It’s also hard to see dangerous objects to avoid when they blend in with the rest of the stuff.  And the game just has an amateurish feel to it.  But if you enjoy simple games like Flappy Bird, you might like this one as well.

Kid Factor:

Kids like dragons, so Choo Parr has that going for it.  Violence is only cartoony and minimal.  If you get hit, the dragon flashes red and says, “Ow!”  If you lose both hearts, the dragon just falls to the ground and says, “Ow!” again.  Reading skill isn’t needed because of the simplistic gameplay, but parental supervision is recommended for the in-game ad removal purchase.
