LEGO Jurassic World (Wii U, 3DS, PS3, PS4, PS Vita, 360, Xbox One, PC)

JURASSIC_BOXJurassic Park is one of the most famous dinosaur films around, and the newest entry in the series is one of this summer’s big movie hits.  And now you can enjoy all four movies in LEGO form with LEGO Jurassic World.  Play as all the characters from the flicks as you explore the original Jurassic Park and re-enact all the famous scenes, and visit the new Jurassic World them park as well!  Drive vehicles and even play as the dinosaurs themselves in the newest in the LEGO game franchise.  It’s available for all current game consoles, but reviewed on Wii U here.

At heart, LEGO Jurassic World is like any other in the block building series. Sock enemies, bash blocks and build new LEGO structures, drive vehicles, use teamwork, and solve puzzles. Collect LEGO studs to buy new characters to use in Free Play, and find hidden gold LEGO bricks to unlock cheats and other goodies. Just like the others, a second player can join in and hop out at any time for some co-op fun.  If you can find hidden blocks of amber, you’ll be able to unlock and play as dinosaurs like the Triceratops, T-Rex, and even the ferocious Velociraptors!  Each character has their own special skills, including the dinos.  The Triceratops, for instance, can bash and break structures blocking your way. You’ll need to use all the skills to find the hidden LEGO mini-kits that let you build all sorts of dinosaur skeletons!

Each level in the game lets you re-enact scenes from each of the four movies.  You’ll find the levels by exploring the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World theme parks that serves as the hub worlds.  LEGO Jurassic World isn’t any different from other LEGO titles, and that includes the problems as well.  In particular, LEGO Jurassic World is incredibly buggy, just like the other games.  Right in the second level, I had to restart it when the Triceratops got stuck on a bridge, and then I had to restart again a couple of levels later.  Luckily there are plenty of save areas and checkpoints, but it’s still annoying that after all these years, the LEGO games lack quality control.  Goals and objectives can sometimes be a little unclear, too.  But if you can look past those problems, LEGO Jurassic World still provides plenty of humorous family-friendly fun for fans of the games and movies.

Kid Factor:

LEGO Jurassic World is rated E-10 with ESRB descriptors of Cartoon Violence and Crude Humor. If you’re OK with your kids watching the movies, they’ll be OK with the games.  I think Jurassic Park is one of the movies that most parents let their kids watch even if they’re too young, but even if you feel your kids are not ready for the movies, the LEGO game may be a good alternative.  Even though the characters are made of LEGOs, they tone down the violence even more.  Any scene in the movies where a dinosaur tears off someone’s limb, in the game the person just holds a LEGO sausage or chicken leg and the dino snatches that instead.  And you should see what they did with the raptor feeding scene with the cow from the first movie!  The crude humor comes from the piles of brown LEGO dino poop that can be found in some levels.  The female paleontologist who reaches into the pile of Triceratops dung from the first movie, in the LEGO game she can dive into piles of LEGO dino poop to find hidden items!

Honestly, I’d let any kid play any of the LEGO game series.  This one could be considered somewhat educational, too, as Mr. DNA spouts all sorts of dinosaur facts during the loading screens.  Reading skill is helpful for Mr. DNA’s hints, too.  And if a younger gamer needs help, a second player can hop in and out at any time for some co-op fun.  Kids love dinosaurs, and kids love LEGOs, so this is a great family-friendly combination.

  1. This sounds fun, Cary! I’m always up for a LEGO game, even if I do sometimes get really frustrated at the bugginess of them.

  2. I can’t stand Lego games, even though they have the great licenses and stuff, and I also like funny games. the gameplay doesn’t do it for me. The graphics in this one look as good as the Lego movie though.

  3. It’s awesome that this covers all four movies. I didn’t know that. I love the humor in LEGO games.
