Mutant Mudds Super Challenge (PS4, Vita, Wii U, 3DS)

MUTANT_BOXA few years ago, game developer Renegade Kid released Mutant Mudds, a run-and-gun 2-D platformer about a kid armed with a water gun who zaps monsters made of mud who are trying to get you!  It featured classic 8-bit graphics and sound, as well as a challenge level similar to games of that era (meaning it was hard).  Well, if that game wasn’t difficult enough for you, now there’s Mutant Mudds Super Challenge.  It’s the same basic game, but the new levels are super tough!  You’ll be hard-pressed to get through Stage 1-1 unless you are a pro!  Mutant Mudds Super Challenge is available for download on most current consoles, but reviewed on PS Vita here.

Controls are simple.  Use one button to jump and hold down to hover for a short while.  And shoot with the other button.  You can take three hits from enemies, but spikes and pits will kill you with one shot, so that’s really what you have to watch out for here.  You can collect coins to boost your score and sometimes find power-ups like guns to help you shoot ghostly enemies, but that’s it.  At certain spots in the game, you can jump in and out of the background, but most of the time it doesn’t add anything to the experience.

Again, this game is super hard, but at least you can choose which level to tackle out of an assortment.  And the levels seem more varied here, too, with stages based on forests, ice, desert, spooky, and high in the clouds.  There are also boss battles and secret stages and exits to find, too.  I’ve never really been a big fan of the Mutant Mudds franchise, as I felt the controls were a bit too slow for a run-and-gun game.  And I also don’t like games that are ridiculously hard for difficulty’s sake.  But if you like challenging games, this one is definitely for you.

Kid Factor:

Mutant Mudds Super Challenge is rated E for Everyone with an ESRB descriptor of Mild Fantasy Violence.  You just shoot mud monsters with a water gun who just splat away when defeated.  Reading skill isn’t needed, as the game is easy to figure out by playing.  But because of the high challenge level, it’s best for older gamers anyway, unless you have some kind of amazing young game playing prodigy on your hands.
