Pauli’s Adventure Island (iOS, Google Play, Windows Store)

Just so you know, this game has nothing to do with Hudson’s Adventure Island game series.  Instead, you play as bunnies Pauli or Gemmi as they run, jump, and spin on a 2-D platforming adventure…presumably on an island.  Their home is being overrun by weird baddies and it’s up to you to help them.  It’s a free-to-play game (with a two dollar ad removal fee) for iOS, Google Play, and Windows Store, but reviewed on iPad here.

Choose to play as boy bunny Pauli or girl bunny Gemmi, although both control the same.  Use virtual buttons on the touch screen to make them run left and right, jump, and do a spin attack.  You can also double jump by pressing the jump button, and then the spin button.  Hop and spin on enemies to defeat them while collecting items.  Stars give you an extra life when you gather 100.  Hearts let you take a few extra hits.  And there are three hidden lucky clovers to find in each level, too.  There are four worlds with eight levels each, and you fight a boss at the end of each world, too.

As with other games with virtual touch screen button controls, it can be hard to move your character as precisely as you like, especially in the later, tougher stages.  Plus I don’t like how you have to press A, then the B button to double jump.  Why can’t I just press A twice?  And the game feels a bit amateurish here and there.  I think I could probably make just as good levels with Super Mario Maker (and I have).  But if you can’t get enough 2-D platforming action, you may want to check this one out anyway.

Kid Factor:

Defeated characters just disappear or fall off the screen, so violence is minimal.  Reading skill is helpful, but not necessary as most text comes with picture cues.  Parental supervision is recommended for the ads and in-game purchase.
