Plunderer’s Adventures (Switch, PC)

Build up a crew of pixel lady pirates in this tower defense style game that plays a bit like Plants vs. Zombies.  You’ll control a female captain and can move up and down and shoot.  Defend your crew on the left side of the screen by shooting enemy pirates and monsters coming in on the right.  Plunderer’s Adventures is available on Switch and PC, but reviewed on Switch here.

In each stage you must survive waves of pirates approaching from the right.  If they reach the left side of the screen, they’ll take one of your crew members and you’ll lose a life.  Lose all lives and you must start the stage over again.  You can hold down the X button to fire a basic shot, and the L and R buttons activate special skills like rapid fire and such.  But you must wait for them to recharge again after you use them.  Every so often a crate will appear that’ll give you extra lives or coins.  The coins that you earn can be used to upgrade your ship, and give you perks like more powerful shots, shorter cooldown times, and more.  You can also unlock a second character that has a charged cannon shot.

The big problem with this game is that right into the second level, the game becomes impossible unless you grind the first level a bunch of times to get enough coins to upgrade your skills.  And the first level is so slow and plodding that it’s not very much fun to do that multiple times.  And then after you beat the second level, you must do that again to get past the third!  Not very much fun if you ask me.

Kid Factor:

Plunderer’s Adventures is rated M for Mature with ESRB descriptors of Nudity and Suggestive Themes.  When you complete a level, you’ll unlock an 8-bit pixel looking picture of lady pirates in bikinis.  And you can shoot pirates and monsters in the game that disappear when defeated.  But I really can’t recommend this game for any age because it’s just so bad.
